OUR VIEW Our View: Ralph Temple fought on for social justice He came to Ashland to retire, but never did DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Ralph Temple came to Ashland in 1996 to retire. Ha, not likely. "Retire" is not a word anyone would associate with Temple, who after his "retirement" took on local cause after local cause, often with positive effect. Temple died in 2011 but lives on through his legacy of fighting for social justice. He also lives on in a memoir, published by his son Johnny, and appropriately titled "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." Temple's years of service to social justice began after a stint in the Army and his graduation from Harvard Law School. He became the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union and worked with such legends as Martin Luther King, Dr. Benjamin Spock and Joan Baez. He believed fiercely in free speech, so much so that e ven though he and his parents fled Nazi aggression, Temple joined in defending the American Nazi Party's right in 1977 to parade in uniform through Skokie, Ill. He could be infuriating to those who disagreed with him, because when he came to believe in something, he didn't back down, he didn't turn back. But while he would ardently defend his position, he was a gentleman who had a smile even for those who disagreed with him. After moving to Ashland, he took on causes ranging from nudity ordinances to excessive police force during a 2004 campaign stop by George W. Bush in Jacksonville. He advocated for the homeless, for people struggling to get by and for underdogs of all shapes and sizes. He never retired.
