Weinberg earns MWL Offensive Player of the Year award Monday Nov 7, 2016 at 8:56 PM Nov 7, 2016 at 8:56 PM Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings @Joe_Zavala99 Ashland senior Nicky Weinberg was voted the Midwestern League Offensive Player of the Year and earned two of the Grizzlies’ nine first-team all-conference awards as Ashland hauled in nine first-team and three second-team nods overall in voting by the league’s coaches last week. Crater senior defensive lineman JT Gill was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and Ashland coach Charlie Hall and Eagle Point coach Seth Womack shared the Coach of the Year award. Hall led the Grizzlies to the Midwestern League title, and the Grizzlies (8-2) beat Mountain View Friday to become the only team from the MWL to advance past the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Weinberg, who has 45 catches for 726 yards and 10 touchdowns, was one of four Grizzlies to earn first- or second-team recognition on both sides of the ball, as the speed burner also was voted a first-team defensive back. Also earning first-team honors on offense and defense for the Grizzlies were senior defensive lineman and tight end McKane Ellis and junior punter and kicker Chad Andrews. Ashland senior Isaac Hyatt was a first-team linebacker and second-team running back selection. Ellis has 169 yards receiving and two touchdowns plus a sack and 5 ½ tackles for a loss, and Andrews is 5-for-6 on field goal attempts, including a game-winner against Crater, and averages 37.7 yards per punt. Hyatt has two interceptions and six tackles for a loss, and has rushed for 421 yards and five TDs. The Grizzlies picked up five first-team spots and two second-team nods on offense, and had five first-teamers and one second-teamer on defense. Joining Weinberg, Ellis and Andrews as first-team offensive selections from Ashland were junior center Troy Boyd, senior guard Kyle Rodden. Ashland senior quarterback Tucker Atteberry, who’s passed for 2,210 yards and 21 touchdowns, was a second-team pick. On defense, Ashland’s lone second-team selection was junior lineman Drake Morey. Marist junior outside hitter Claire Hoffman was named the MWL Player of the Year, and Marist coach Shari Pimental was voted the Coach of the Year.
