Photos by Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings GRANTS PASS — Ashland’s offense was stymied for the second week in a row, and Grants Pass had no trouble capitalizing in a Southern Oregon Conference blowout. The Cavers rebounded from a scoreless first half by scoring 14 in the second quarter and 21 in the second en route to a 35-12 win Friday night at Mel Ingram Field. Grants Pass earned its fifth straight win over Ashland to get back to .500 overall (3-3) and improve to 2-0 in the SOC. The Grizzlies dropped their second straight to fall to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the SOC. Ashland was hamstrung by key injuries, not to mention a relentless Grants Pass defense that had the Grizzlies backpedaling all night long. Ashland was held to 195 yards of total offense, including a season-low 44 on the ground. Grizzly senior quarterback Sam Littleton completed 6 of 10 passes for 44 yards before coming out with a thigh injury. His replacement, junior Gus Gaviglio, was 10-for-14 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. “Their defensive front did a great job against our line,” Ashland head coach Charlie Hall said. “They did a good job penetrating, they did a good job on pass rush.” Ashland’s Josh Cornelius caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Gaviglio late in the third quarter to get the Grizzlies within 14-6, but the point-after attempt failed and it was lights out from there for Ashland. Grants Pass running back Craig Dolmage rumbled 52 yards on third-and-10 with 10:22 to go to make it 20-6, and Spencer Fogelquist returned an interception 20 yards for another touchdown less than a minute later to put the game away. “I don’t think we played with any heart, that’s what it boils down to,” Ashland center Chris Petetit said. Grants Pass spread the field in the early going, but when that didn’t work -- Ashland’s defense pitched a shutout in the first half -- went almost exclusively to the power running game. It worked. The Cavers finished with 298 yards of offense, 225 on the ground. Dolmage gained 97 yards on 15 carries, and Matt Deivert gained 96 yards on 11 carries. Grizz QB Sam Littleton drops back to hand off the ball before he was pulled with a leg injury. Ashland was forced to play without leading rusher Dylan Steeves, who injured his knee in practice earlier in the week. Hall said the injuries should not be used as an excuse. “Winning is a habit, and so is losing if you don’t stop it right now,” he said. Cornelius caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Gus Gaviglio with 47 seconds left, but the score only served to make the final score look more respectable. Both teams struggled on offense in the first half. Each had four drives, with Ashland gaining just 67 yards and Grants Pass moving 117 yards. Behind two third-down conversions on pass plays, the Cavers moved all the way to the Ashland 20-yard line on their first drive before stalling. Their 42-yard field goal attempt was scuttled after a bad snap led to a sack. The Grizzlies advanced to the Grants Pass 38 on the ensuing drive, but a fumbled snap by Sam Littleton and an incomplete pass forced the Grizzlies to punt from the 46. Ashland travels to Eagle Point on Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Eagles.
