GLOBAL ASSISTANCE Fundraiser will benefit Eyes to Burma Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 21, 2015 at 3:54 PM Posted Sep. 21, 2015 at 3:54 PM » Social News Local report Since Fred Stockwell began assisting Burmese refugees who live and work at a rubbish dump in Mae Sot, Thailand, in 2008, hundreds have benefited from the efforts of the organization he founded, Eyes to Burma. Among many improvements to daily life, this community of about 100 families now has clean water and its children are attending school. Other continuing projects include medical assistance, food supplementation, shelter, work tools and transportation to local hospitals. Local board members and volunteers here in the Rogue Valley organize events that support Stockwell's humanitarian efforts by raising funds, 100 percent of which go to help the refugees. Stockwell, the Eyes to Burma board and others are unpaid volunteers. Proceeds from the annual Eyes to Burma Benefit and Celebration — which will be held this weekend — as well as private donations year-round from local and global supporters (from 19 countries) fund the life-saving efforts. The public is invited to the Eyes to Burma Benefit and Celebration at Dana Campbell Vineyards, 1320 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland, from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27. Stockwell will speak about changes and progress in the community, live music will be provided by Band du Pays and a swing dance lesson will be taught by Cori Grimm. Food and beverages will be for sale, and a raffle and live auction of items donated by local businesses and individuals will be emceed by Jeff Golden, creator and host of the television program "Immense Possibilities." Tickets for the 21-and-over event are $25 and are available in advance at Music Coop and Paddington Station in Ashland, and can also be purchased at the event. The owners of Dana Campbell Vineyards are donating their facility this year. Last year, the owners of Grizzly Peak Winery donated their venue and Eyes to Burma raised $8,456 from combined ticket sales, auction items and donations. The proceeds funded clean water, food subsidies, new shelters, school fees and uniforms, computers and medical care.
