--> --> Shirley I. Berninghausen Shirley Idelle Berninghausen, 78, of Ashland died October 17, 2001 at her home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. November 10, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley's name to the World War II Women's Memorial, Ashland Senior High School, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Born Shirley Idelle Bemis on January 4, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minn., she was the daughter of John Delbert and Ida Victoria (Larson) Bemis. In November of 1944 she married Richard George Berninghausen in Rapid City, S.D., who preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Berninghausen served in the Women's Air Corps. She worked as a secretary for the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland and also worked until retirement for Dr. J.R. Reynolds as a receptionist/bookkeeper. Shirley was an ardent Grizzly, Trailblazer, Mariner, and Minnesota Viking fan and was enjoying the American League Playoffs at the time of her death. She was a very active member of the Ashland's First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. She and her husband served for the Tudor Guild for many years. She volunteered with the Ashland Public Schools from 1953 through the 90s, continuing to volunteer long after her own children had graduated. She was very proud to have been designated an honorary Ashland High School alumna. Survivors include three sons, Bill of Gresham, Ore., Tom of Wilsonville, Ore., and Harold of Ashland; a daughter, Marla Deere of Shoreline, Wash.; a sister, Dorothy Antil of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren in the Portland, Ore., and Prescott, Ariz., areas. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland. Email your...
