Ashland Daily Tidings/DENISE BARATTA Ashland girls go out with a victory By Sarah Petersen Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland girls soccer team bid its seniors goodbye with a bang. The Grizzlies (2-5 Southern Oregon Conference) netted a 3-1 victory over Eagle Point Tuesday afternoon at North Mountain Park in its season finale. The Ashland squad loses four dominant seniors this season: senior captain defender Darby Fallon, goalie Stephanie Hargis, defender Abigail Gooch and midfielder Caitlin Sanford. "I am sorry to see them go," head coach Iman Siadat said. "They all did a great job leadership wise. They held us together through some rough times. I wish them the best of luck next year in whatever they do." The Grizzlies made sure the seniors got a proper farewell, despite surrendering an early goal to the Eagles (1-6 SOC). Four minutes into the game Terra Jackson's corner kick was guided into the Grizz net by Alissa Goslin to put the Eagles up 1-0. All that did was fire up the Grizz. At the 12-minute mark, Gooch passed the ball to sophomore forward Danya Rose-Merkle who rocketed a shot from 8-yards out into the back of the net to knot the score. The score stayed that way until the second half. After 59 minutes of play junior forward Kelly Thompson passed the ball across midfield to sophomore Rachel Salem. After a scramble in the box, Salem emerged with the ball and scored to give the Grizz the lead for good at 2-1. Freshman midfielder Sylvia Van Ausdal saw a wide open Salem who fired successfully at the 63rd minute for the final tally of the season. "I'm sad this was our last home game," Fallon said. "But we're all looking forward to other things. We're all going to definitely miss soccer. The freshmen have a really good chance of improving this school's soccer program. We had fun and it was a relief to get a win at the end of the season. It's a nice way to go out and to remember what we did." The Grizzlies fired 13 shots on goal while the Eagles managed only three. "We played to Eagle Point's level in the first half," Siadat said. "Then we stepped it up in the second half and played with confidence. I pulled some JV players up today to see how they would do and they did a great job. I am looking forward to next season." Ashland Boys Soccer At Eagle Point, the Grizzlies clinched the No. 3 slot in the Southern Oregon Conference with an 8-1 victory over Eagle Point Tuesday afternoon . Klamath Union claimed top honors in the SOC while South Medford captured the No. 2 position. The Grizzlies (10-2, 5-2 SOC) travel to take on the Valley League's No. 2 team on Nov. 3. The team with either be Corvallis or Crescent Valley - both of which are ranked in the state's top five. Ashland senior Scott Beaver recorded a hat trick in the second half. The all-star's first goal came 12 seconds into the half, as he stole Eagle Point's inital kick, dribbled his way through the Eagle defense and scored. Flether Beaudoin, Josh Romberg, Matt Sharp and Jesse Hodges each scored first-half goals for Ashland, while Brook Golling added a second-half goal. Drew Curriston scored the lone goal for Eagle Point (3-9-2, 0-7 SOC) on a corner kick in the final 10 seconds of the game. "To be successful in the playoffs we are going to need to work hard and be more aggressive," Grizz head coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou said. Crescent Valley (11-2, 8-0) plays Corvallis (7-0-4, 6-0) Thursday to decide the Valley League title. Email your...
