Camp Low Echo, the 32-acre Girl Scout camp at Lake of the Woods, will undergo major renovation and restoration starting next year, and use could begin by the summer of 2018. The Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington put the camp up for sale in 2013, citing $85,000 in needed renovation and a $20,000 operating deficit. Generations of local Girl Scouts had enjoyed summer sojourns there for 80 years, and the decision was met with dismay. In 2014, the Sid and Karen DeBoer Foundation purchased the camp buildings and the Forest Service permit that allows it to operate as a recreational site. The DeBoers then donated the camp to the Ashland YMCA. Now comes the welcome news of a $150,000 grant from the William and Florence Schneider Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. The gift will help pay for the renovations. Just knowing the camp would be preserved was good news, but the added benefit of an upgraded facility available for rent by community groups and private organizations is incalculable. What is calculable is the cost of renovation, estimated at $8.5 million. More than half of that has been raised, but $3.5 million remains to be secured. The YMCA may be in Ashland, but Low Echo's rebirth is a gift to the entire Southern Oregon region. Thanks to the DeBoers and the Schneider Foundation.
