AHS grad helps get boat for crew club By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tiding s Future rowers of Ashland High's crew club should have at least one ex-Grizzly on their Christmas list. AHS 2003 graduate Lindsay Carlson's senior project was to find $5,000 worth of grant money to complete the purchase of an eight person Pocock boat. The Seattle-made crew boat retails between $16,000 and $17,000, according to Grizz head coach Andy Baxter. "Lindsay went up north and pitched fund raising and it paid off well," Baxter said of his newly departed rower. The boat is named Lindsay in gratitude for Carlson's efforts. "As a coach, I can tell you she has all the qualities of a rower," Baxter said. Even though the final $5,000 was Carlson's brainchild, the balance of the boat was paid for by hard work from the entire 32-person AHS crew. "The $5,000 was great, but the big part of it was that they managed to pay off the boat in under a year through fund raising," Baxter said. AHS� crew had a tough year in Carlson's final season as a Grizzly. Weather hampered some of their practices, and the regattas. The Grizzlies participated in three races last year: the Dexter Lake Covered Bridge near Eugene on April 12-13; the Brentwood Regatta in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on April 26-28; and the Northwest Regionals in Vancouver, Wash., on May 16-18. Baseball At Gresham, after dropping their first four games on a long road trip, the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team has regained its hitting stroke. Medford (29-5) recorded its seventh straight win, all on the road, and used 21 hits during a 19-1 victory Monday over Beaverton's Oregon Mortgage in the first game of a doubleheader Mount Hood Community College. The Mustangs added a 13-2, five-inning win in Game 2. The Mustangs scored nine times on 10 hits in the top of the seventh in Game 1 to run away with the contest. Evan McArthur and Dustin Butler each hit home runs - a solo shot and three-run blast, respectively - and Mike Allen went 4-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs. Reese Lamson added three hits and two RBIs, while Ryan Heil, Jimmy Ulrey and Beau Hovland each had two hits. Allen struck out eight to record the pitching win, and Travis Glass struck out the side in the seventh. In Game 2, Medford pitcher Richard Goosmann got off to a shaky start but settled into his third win of the season. The Mustangs scored four times in the first on just one hit and added seven runs in the third inning to pull away for the five-inning win. McArthur went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Butler and Corey O'Neill each added two hits. Medford wraps up its 13-game road trip with a 1 p.m. doubleheader today at Redmond.
