BEST BETS 5 picks for live entertainment Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Art Inspires Ashland Hear painter Gregg Kreutz, sculptor Kevin Chrisman and Ashland Art Center executive director Denise Baxter will present lectures, art demonstrations and discussions at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. Doors open at 6 p.m. for for a reception. There will be appetizers and a no-host bar. Tickets are $35. The presentations are part of Art Inspires Ashland, a weekend of workshops designed to inspire artists and art enthusiasts. Topics will include still-life in oils, sculpting the human figure, and using creativity to set and achieve goals. Tickets for the lectures, along with registrations for the workshops, are available online at artinspiresashland.org or at Ashland Art Center, 357 E. Main St. 'Spotlight on Carole King' This musical revue features 22 of singer and songwriter Carole King's '60s hit songs, including “One Fine Day,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “The Locomotion,” “You’ve Got A Friend,” “It’s Too Late,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and “I Feel The Earth Move.” King wrote many songs made popular by various recording artists, until she broke onto the music scene in 1970 with her landmark album “Tapestry." “Spotlight on Carole King” is written by and stars Gayle Wilson. Presila Quinby directs. Musical arrangements are by Brent Olstad. Guitar player Dave Bernard joins Wilson for duets "Up on the Roof" and "Crying in the Rain." Olstad is featured on piano, Michael Vannice on wind instruments, Steve Fain on bass and Steve Sutfin on drums. Rose Passione and Karen Cooke are narrators and backup singers. The show previews Thursday, Nov. 12, opens Friday, Nov. 13, and runs through Nov. 22 at Camelot Theatre, 101 Talent Ave., Talent. Curtain is at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Preview tickets are $22, all others are $26. Victor Wooten Bass player, composer, author and five-time Grammy winner Victor Wooten, along with guitarist Jeff Pevar, one-man jam band and vocalist Cornflower and peace troubadour James Twyman, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. Bass Player magazine named Wooten Bass Player of the Year three times, and he was name one of the top 10 bassists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. In addition to his solo career and collaborations with various artists, Wooten has played bass for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones since the band formed in 1988. Tickets are $22 in advance and can be purchased online at liveatthearmory.com or Music Coop, 268 E. Main St. Tickets will be $28 at the door. Aeolus String Quartet The chamber quartet will perform Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in D major, Douglas Boyce's "Alcyone," and Cesar Franck's Piano Quintet in F major at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. A second concert will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat major and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. Pianist James Parker, a member of the Gryphon Trio, will join the quartet. Tickets are $33 or $38, $5 for students and Oregon Trail Card holders. Saturday's matinee tickets are $20 for age 19 through 35. Reserved seats are available online at chambermusicconcerts.org , general seating is available by calling 541-552-6154 or 541-552-6348. Thad Beckman The Portland singer, songwriter and electric and steel guitar player will celebrate his new CD, "Streets of Disaster," with a performance Saturday, Nov. 14, at a house concert in Ashland.
