Like few other issues (abortion might qualify), this problem is profoundly complex, clearly divisive, and does not lend itself to easy CNN sound bite analysis. If there is a middle ground it will be geography not easily reached as positions harden and the rhetoric heats up. As the debate is framed, what is striking is that there is so little discussion about causation. The course will answer questions such as: What are the Jewish roots of the “Our father” prayer? What are the Jewish roots of the Eucharist? What did the notions of heaven, salvation, and redemption mean to religious Jews in the first century? What were the causes of Christian anti-Semitism?
