The new shows include installations by Marlene Alt and Garrick Imatani that were created in response to the landscape, history and culture of the Rogue Valley, along with works created by Sang-ah Choi during her artist residency at Southern Oregon University, and silkscreens by Sister Corita Kenty, an activist who uses images from popular culture in her prints. An opening reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the museum on the SOU campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. The exhibits will be displayed through June 13. Alt and Imatani's installations will be displayed in the museum's Main and Treehaven galleries. These Southern Oregon Site Project installations are funded in part by the Ford Family Foundation and are designed to support the creation and presentation of new art by Oregon artists. SOU students are serving as assistants to gain insight into the artistic process and experience working with professional artists as they construct their works in place. Imatani’s installation reflects his interest in the history of the Works Progress Administration and its impact on the development of Ashland and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Imatani is working with the imagery of Diego Rivera’s WPA mural, "The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City," which is in the San Francisco Art Institute. His interest is in the direct influence Rivera’s work had on the WPA movement. Imatani reimagines Rivera’s trompe l’oeil style and depictions of workers through a large-scale installation that functions as a stage set, complete with three-dimensional stairs, scaffolding and plywood cutouts for figures to occupy. Imatani is an associate professor of art at Lewis & Clark College. His projects have been exhibited at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston, Portland Art Museum, Art, Design and Architecture Museum at University of California Santa Barbara, Institute for Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art, Art in General, Ditch Projects and The White Box in Portland. Alt's exhibit is titled "Silent Movies." The professor emerita of art at SOU has shown in solo and group exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Art, Nevada Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, Yellowstone Art Museum, Northern Arizona University Museum and North Dakota Museum of Art, among many others. Choi's work will show in the Schneider's Heiter Gallery and will include a collection of paintings, ceramic objects and an artist's book. Choi earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea. She earned a second master's from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has had solo shows at the Portland Art Museum, the Sandra Gering Gallery, the Arario Gallery and the Doosan Gallery in New York City. Her first solo show in Seoul was in 2009. Kent will present bold, graphic works she's created from the '50s through the '70s, including "Signal Code Alphabet" and 15 serigraphs from the Corita Art Center and Portland Art Museum, in the Schneider's entry gallery. Kent's work with silkscreen has helped establish serigraphy as a serious medium in the art world. Her earliest prints were explicitly religious, a reflection of her strong religious faith. By the '60s, her prints took a secular, activist direction as she integrated images from the '60s civil rights movement and Vietnam War with politically charged slogans. Events to complement the exhibits are planned. The Portland-based Physical Education will present a dance and performance piece at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at the museum. The group will offer a movement workshop at noon Saturday, May 9. Choi will present an artist's talk at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in the Meese Auditorium of the SOU Center for the Visual Arts. Free Family Days are set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 18, and Saturday, May 23, and docent-led educational tours will be available on Tuesdays. Call 541-552-6245 to schedule group tours. The Schneider Museum of Art is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the corner of Indiana Street and Siskiyou Boulevard in Ashland. Admission is a donation of $5. Museum parking is available in the metered lot between Frances Lane and Indiana. There also is limited parking behind the museum.
