He is not a politician. He is an honest, independent person who loves his family, his dog, the mountains and the city he grew up in. He is running for the sole purpose of being of service to Ashland without any agendas or the need to micromanage. He is truly "green" if anyone had taken the time to interview him, he does not want to expand the urban growth boundary and he plans on finding ways to market AFN to make it a profitable asset to the city. Lastly, he believes it would be a mistake to rezone all our industrial land for housing as it can't be rezoned back. Bringing light industry to Ashland can provide jobs and income for families who want to take advantage of living, working and going to school in this special place. Look at Cate Hartzell's record and watch previous council meetings. Ashland is ready for a change. Mike Morris will listen more, talk less and make decisions. Janice Marvin Ashland Vote for women in local elections Next month's election may reverse a longtime trend toward equal representation of women in local office. The Jackson County Board of Commissioners will have no women members unless Sue Densmore can overtake C.W. Smith, who is ahead in a recent poll. On the Ashland City council, we would have a 5-1 male majority if Cate Hartzell fails to win a tough race for re-election. Both Densmore and Hartzell are superbly qualified, intelligent candidates who will bring needed balance and depth to government decision-making. Please join me in supporting Cate and Sue on Nov. 2. Tom Marr Ashland Cate's caution is good for city In our small town sometimes keeping things the way they are is the best decision government can make. Rushing to judgment on important issues could quickly endanger everything that makes our town unique. This city needs a thoughtful voice of calm consensus building now more than ever. Cate Hartzell has been that voice. Long before she was elected to the city council Cate tirelessly volunteered herself to numerous causes in our city. Her civic spirit sets a standard for all of us. We all have some obligation to give back to our community. Cate takes this obligation more seriously than most of us. Many difficult issues confront our community as we strive to grow without comprising our values. Cate's years of experience both with the government and the people of Ashland will help guide us well in the years to come. Please join me in voting to re-elect Cate Hartzell to the city council. Mat Marr Ashland Hartzell's work speaks for itself We had the pleasure of working with Cate Hartzell when she attended Youthfocus board meetings at our request. She came with a wealth of knowledge, ideas, and contact suggestions. She returned our calls promptly, checked back with us on progress, and stayed actively interested in our efforts. Cate energetically gives her all, acting for Ashland from her heart. This is a woman who has the best interests of the community as her top priority. We have enormous respect and appreciation for the job she's done and highly urge her return to city council. Wayne and Christine Burns Youthfocus Executive Board Members Ashland Leading, not muddling I will be voting for Cate Hartzell for city councilor. I feel particularly drawn to offer my support in writing because of the misrepresentation of her by Mr. Sandler in a recent Tidings column. Far from "muddling and getting in the way of the process," Cate is one who holds strongly to the ideals of careful decision-making that takes into account the many factors involved in making wise, sustainable choices for our city. I would prefer that things are not rushed through if they are important enough to affect the whole community. Her record shows that she has always supported affordable housing and the arts. I certainly hope that she will be there in the next four years watching out for the benefit of the community-at-large Paul Giancarlo Ashland ICCA needs our contributions In a recent issue of your newspaper was a long article about how the retired and rich are taking over our community. Now yesterday was a long article about the partial closing of the ICCA, the only local agency serving the immediate needs of the homeless, also a part of our community. As a previous long time volunteer of the ICCA, serving under the able direction of Jean Hallinan, I can personally testify about the many minor miracles that are a daily part of the organization. What cannot be served immediately can be referred elsewhere to the required needs. Many of the local community religious organizations are generous in the support, but I can speak from experience that the constant supply of many small personal checks are necessary to meet the financial needs to keep the agency open. Without them, the needs would not be met. I strongly urge the community to open their hearts to this need, and send a contribution to the ICCA at 144 N. Second St. here in Ashland. Florence M. Bunker Ashland Kudos to AHS staff, kids To the almost 700 kids that attended the 2004 Ashland High School homecoming dance: From my perch on the stage of the Britt Ballroom, I witnessed all of you create a dance that worked. From its early, anxious, moments to the sad recognition of the last song, I saw you having fun - everyone was dancing and sometimes singing and being kind to each other. I remember, at one point, watching your entire crowd appear to move together. It was amazing. Thank you for your positive and generous spirits as you celebrated together. In addition, to the Administration of Ashland High School, to the parent and teacher chaperones, to SOU security, to APD officers, and to Officer Malcus Williams - the DJ, my thanks. Jan Janssen Ashland Police Department Vote Kerry I was pleased to read the letter from Craig Smith, an independent voting for Kerry, in your Oct.1 edition. Kerry is not my ideal, but I am grateful for a man who can admit mistakes and correct them. The ability to change his mind when he should is one of the most important abilities of a good leader! I could believe that George W. Bush has not changed his mind since he was ten years old. But we know he has made a lot of promises he evidently never intended to keep. It's no use to tell us the economy is fine when so many are losing our jobs. It's clear that the rich are getting vastly richer while the poor are poorer and the middle class are stuck with the taxes. Margaret K.
