LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Jan. 19 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 19, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Jan. 19, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Saving Iron Mike I have always admired iron Mike, looking off into the distance, perhaps seeing into the future. I am very concerned about this city. Have you seen the traffic at 5 o'clock? The unbridled development, the Plaza vandalized, no swans in the park. What's next, Lithia Park? Yes, Iron Mike belongs in a museum. There is a simple and obvious way to replace Mike: Create a reproduction of him by a laser scan and 3-D printing. You can 3-D print in almost any material, including brass or bronze. The statue could be created in sections and then stacked one piece upon another and bonded together. The sculpture can then be ground to smooth the surface and then polished. You would have a permanent record of its construction and dimension, able to reproduce at any time. I hope this brings some hope and a way to save something that is very important to the city. Neil Stewart, Ashland Coffee clarification It's wonderful to read that our local roasters efforts were recognized at the national level. I'm writing to correct one misconception in the article. The fair trade price (currently $1.70 a pound for organic coffee, plus a social premium of 20 cents a pound) is a minimum guaranteed price. If the world market price ever falls below that level, fair trade roasters pledge to pay that price and premium. When the world market price is above that level, as it is right now, fair trade roasters pay at least the world market price plus the social premium. Right now that would be $2.11 per pound ($1.91 plus 20 cents) for conventional coffee, and more for organic coffee. Given the state of world coffee markets right now, a more meaningful expression of the "fairness" of the price would be the multiple of the world market price, not the multiple of the fair trade price. Michael Niemann, Ashland One more for the list After reading that Rep. Randy Weber, R-Texas, recently compared President Barack Obama to Hitler, I thought I’d dust off my list of derogatory terms that have been used to describe our president. I’ve left out the names he’s been called (“tar baby” for one) just to keep the list manageable. Here goes: “fascist”, “socialist”, “communist”, “terrorist” (remember that “terrorist fist bump” the President and his fellow traveler Michelle exchanged way back when?), “elitist”, “racist”, “imperialist”, “feminist”, “sexist” (since he’s a “feminist” he must be a man-hater!), “Islamist”, “defeatist”, “radicalist” (or is he just a “radical”; I can never keep those two things straight), “regalist” and “Marxist”. The list goes on and on and now, after Representative Weber’s comparison, I’ll have to add “Hitlerist” to my list. My work is never done. Michael Mooney, Ashland Why ridicule faith? The cartoonists at the magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris certainly didn’t deserve to be killed for satirizing the Muslim religion, but I don’t feel they were totally innocent either. Why make fun of others’ religions? This only leads to more hate in an already violent world. Friendly disagreement is certainly necessary, but ridicule of those known to be particularly sensitive is like crying “Fire!” in a crowded theater. We don’t gain advocates to our point of view when we do this — quite the opposite. We only increase disagreement.
