Independent Media Week “showcases a coalition of independent media producers, local activists, and community groups organized around the theme that ‘a well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy.’” The 11th annual event continues through Saturday, May 2. On Wednesday, April 29, SOU’s UN Club will host a series of films and workshops showcasing local independent media, a workshop on self-broadcasting techniques, and a panel discussion on the future of independent media in the Rogue Valley. Wednesday’s activities, all in the Meese Room on the third floor of the Hannon Library at SOU, include: ∙ 8 to 9 a.m. — The UN Club shows short films from the RVTV and community media library. ∙ 9 to 10 a.m. — Breakfast, introduction, muffins and coffee sponsored by the UN Club. ∙ 10 a.m. to noon — Workshop and films about successful independent media campaigns. Health Care for All Oregon and Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice host a discussion about and a showing of “The Health Care Movie,” an independent documentary produced in the Northwest about how the health care systems in Canada and the United States evolved to be so different. ∙ Noon to 2:30 p.m. — Media Eye presents “Programming the Nation?,” a 2011 feature-length social documentary about the alleged history, research, implementation and potential effects of subliminal programming in American mass-media, including interviews with Noam Chomsky, Amy Goodman, Dennis Kucinich, Eldon Taylor, Wilson Bryan Key. There will be a discussion with filmmaker Jeff Warrick after the movie via Skype. ∙ 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. — Wendi Ingwerson of Blackstone Audio in Ashland presents a workshop about how to self-broadcast. ∙ 3:30 to 5 p.m. — Film “ You Don’t Like The Truth: Four Days Inside Guantanamo” followed by discussion. ∙ 5 to 6 p.m. — Film “Independent Media as a Tool for Social Justice” followed by discussion with a panel including keynote speaker Deb Van Poolen and SOU Assistant Professor of Communications Precious Yamaguchi . ∙ 6 to 8 p.m. — Panel discussion on the future of media, how traditional media is evolving in the digital age and how a community can better produce media with Bert Etling (Ashland Daily Tidings), Josh Gross (Rogue Valley Messenger), Jason Houk (Rogue Valley Community Press), Wendy King (Vibes) and Keith Mansuer (Oregon Cannabis Connection). (This paragraph has been changed to correct the spelling of one of the names.) ∙ 8 to 10 p.m. — Showing of “To Light a Candle,” a film highlighting the persecution of Bahá'ís in Iran. A keynote address by Austin Powell and Debra Van Poolen on the topic of “Local Roots, Global Reach,” is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the Rogue River Room inside the Stevenson Union on campus at SOU. It is free and open to the public. Powell is managing editor of DailyDot.com, one of the highest-trafficked news sites on the World Wide Web. From his home in Ashland, Powell remotely manages a staff of more than 30 employees. Van Poolen is best known for her courtroom drawings of Pvt. Chelsea Manning’s trial on charges related to the release of confidential government documents. “This is an outstanding opportunity not just for SOU students,” said Dr. Erik Palmer, assistant professor of convergent media at SOU, “but for the entire community to come out and hear about the world of emerging media from two great perspectives.” SOU’s second annual Emerging Media Convention runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2. It features panel discussions and professional development opportunities on animation and gaming, copyright law and more. One of the highlights of the convention is Artist Ally, which provides students an opportunity to display their work for both the SOU and Rogue Valley community to view. The Emerging Media Conference is an event designed to allow businesses, SOU students, and alumni to collaborate and expand their support network. Its primary goal is to attract a wide audience consisting of students, faculty, high schools, and the community. “In addition to providing a venue to display their creative works, Artist Ally offers students a chance to network with potential employers, gain freelance opportunities, and meet with students who share similar passions,” according to Palmer.
