I’m referring to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” It debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in late August amid a flurry of online excitement caused by Swift’s Apple keynote about how she was going “pop.” I know, you mean she wasn’t a pop star already? Not officially. But in her own words on Aug. 18, she said her new album, “1989,” would be her “very first documented, official pop album.” Swift has grown on me the more she has grown as a singer. However, she’s been a pop star in my eyes from the moment her teardrops hit her guitar. She’s that kind of artist. Her last album, “Red,” was a pure pop record through and through. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and “Red” were all great pop songs. However, country music still embraced the music while honoring her worldwide success. It was only a matter of time before they put their foot down. The moment Taylor’s “POP” palindrome became Internet fodder, the Country Music Association bid farewell to the pop star. Newsflash: Taylor Swift is not the first, nor the last, country music star to cross over. Can we say Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Ronnie Milsap, the Oak Ridge Boys, Eddie Rabbitt, Juice Newton, Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood? The list goes on and on. CMA is just jealous of her success and talent to conquer the world. Furthermore, “pop” just means you’re “popular,” and Swift is definitely popular. With all that said, why the title “1989” and why now? That’s an easy one to answer. Swift was born in 1989, and why not do an album inspired by the music of the 1980s? Swift loves ’80s music. And, who doesn’t love ’80s pop? The entire new album is straight out of the ’80s, like totally! Swift is no doubt the most prolific songwriter of her generation, but “1989” sees her lighten up a bit. To do this, Swift linked up with pop producer Max Martin and songwriter and fun. band member Jack Antonoff. Swift and Antonoff co-wrote the tracks, “I Wish You Would” and “Out of the Woods.” Both songs are destined to become singles. The track “Bad Blood,” the album’s most promising, is an energetic, attention-getting fight song, while “Style” carries on the slick, flowy synthesized beats that made “Shake It Off” a hit from the get-go. Those of you hoping to hear more on her love life in her lyricism will have to find another pop wannabe now. Swift’s days of spilling her guts are over for now, but fear not — Swift can still deliver a heart-felt love story. “I Know Places” is one of those songs to add to her legacy. David T.
