The Raiders beat the Mountaineers, 80-67. Robert Petetit | For the Tidings The Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team converted its first eight shots and never trailed in a physical 80-67 Cascade Conference triumph over Eastern Oregon University at McNeal Pavilion Saturday night. The NAIA Div. II seventh-ranked Raiders (18-3, 7-2 CC) topped the Mountaineers for the 10th consecutive meeting since 2001 by storming to a 41-22 first-half edge and holding off an Eastern surge that cut a 16-point second-half edge to six (66-60) with 3:24 remaining. Senior guard Steve Farley and senior All-American forward Shea Washington proceeded to score on back-to-back possessions, and SOU made 10 of 12 free throw attempts in the closing moments to improve to 11-1 at home this season. Washington finished with game-highs of 23 points and nine rebounds, while senior wing RaShawn McAllister amassed a career-high 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Eastern Oregon, which went 0-2 on the tough SOU-OIT road trip for the fifth straight season, received 21 points off the bench from junior post Kyle Janke, who converted 10 of his 14 shots. The Mountaineers, however, received only 21 points from the all-star trio of Maurice Thomas, Chad Fairbanks and Mark Corollo — a scoring combination that accounted for roughly half the team’s scoring output entering the fray. “We guarded pretty well except for the last five minutes of the first half,” Raider coach Brian McDermott said. “(Eastern) really went after us inside and got us into foul trouble. They took advantage of it, but, fortunately, we shot well for the first time in a while.” After canning 17 of 28 field goals in the opening stanza (61 percent), Southern settled at a season-best 56 percent (27 of 48). EOU went 13-for-25 in both halves (52 percent) but was out-rebounded 29-25. Farley finished with 15 points, while sophomore wing Matt Cowell went 3-for-4 from 3-point range for 11 points for SOU, which led 46-37 at the break. The Raiders travel to Northwest University and Evergreen State College next weekend. Women’s Basketball The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team scored 30 of the first 37 points and breezed to a 79-42 Cascade Conference road victory at Southern Oregon University Saturday night. The Mountaineers (11-6, 5-3 CC) handed the Raiders (9-11, 2-7) their fourth consecutive McNeal Pavilion setback by limiting SOU to a miserable 32-percent clip from the field (16 of 50). Junior post Adria Layne led all players with 18 points for Eastern, while junior guard Christie Weaver canned three 3-pointers en route to a 17-point outing. Junior post Kelsey Richards scored 12 for Southern, which trailed 38-15 at the half. EOU shot 45 percent (28 of 62) and out-boarded SOU 39-35.
