Letters to the editor: Who's sorry now? A recent Tidings letter submission alleged that "Those who respect the American flag care more about cloth than people." In fact, the overwhelming majority of those who respect our national flag supported our military campaign to liberate the 32 million enslaved, brutalized, sexually mutilated and inhumanely executed (by decapitation, and in torture chambers) people of Iraq. One might ask of those who were caught up in the flag- burning and protest demonstrations "on behalf of the women and children of Iraq," why are you now focused on the technicality of the presence or absence of WMD's in that region, rather than joyfully celebrating the newly found freedom of a member nation of the "One World Order" community of nations concept you ordinarily espouse so effusively? You mean if we fail to locate WMD's in the region you would rather U.S. forces had not participated in the most humanitarian international rescue mission since the Nazi concentration camps were liberated in WW II? Enough partisan posturing with 2004 in mind. Sometimes it is more politically rewarding to demonstrate an awareness of your grasp of the big picture. Robert H. Bonter, Talent DeFazio works to protect the taxpayer While Congressman Greg Walden created forest legislation to pay back the timber industry for their healthy campaign donations, Peter DeFazio worked to protect the taxpayer. Peter DeFazio saw through Walden's corporate payback legislation that allocated no money to fuel reduction. Peter DeFazio offered an alternative that while not perfect, would protect homes and communities rather than corporate profits. Congressman Peter DeFazio looked at what the forest needed. Peter DeFazio worked to produce a sensible bill that would not cause more polarization. Walden produced a bill that former Governor Kitzhaber declared would result in less work getting done. The rest of the Oregon delegation voted against Walden's bill. The only reason Walden stays in office is because many of the members in his district have no idea how foolish he behaves in Congress. Now Ron Wyden must take on the spirit of Peter DeFazio and stop Walden's bill in the Senate.
