Firefighters sort through the smoky rubble of a trailer Monday in Talent's Old Pacific Mobile Village. Denise Baratta | Ashland Daily Tidings About 11:15 a.m., Blanche Malaby awoke to find herself surrounded by smoke and flames in her 23-foot metal travel trailer located at the Old Pacific Mobile Village at 232 Talent Ave., Jackson County Fire District No. 5 officials said. "The flames were over the top of her bed," Fire Chief Dan Marshall said. "She was very, very fortunate to get out." Malaby was able to escape the burning trailer with only minor injuries, suffering some smoke inhalation. She was the only person home at the time. Malaby grabbed a fire extinguisher and attempted to put out the flames, but was too late, fire officals said. By the time fire crews arrived, the structure was totally engulfed in flames, Marshall said. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze before it threatened any nearby structures or vehicles, fire officials said. Marshall said the residence did not have a smoke detector. Fire District 5 Capt. Scott Traina said the blaze was caused by an extension cord that had furniture and rugs on top of it. "When you put pressure on it, it can become an ignition source," he said. "That sort of pressure can cause the extension cord to fail." At the scene, her hair singed by the fire and her bedroom slippers still on, Malaby could only watch as firefighters put out what was left of where she lived. Fire officials said it appeared Malaby would be staying with relatives in the area. Crews from Fire District 5, the Phoenix Fire Department and Ashland Fire and Rescue responded to the fire. A cat, a rabbit and a bird perished in the blaze. A dog was able to escape unharmed, Traina said. The value of the structure and its contents was estimated at several thousand dollars.
