The Grizzlies on Tuesday scored six runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 10-7 nonconference victory over Crescent Valley in the first round of the eight-team Ashland Spring Break Tournament. Robert Petetit | For the Tidings The win at the Grizzlies' junior varsity field advanced Ashland to the second round, where it will face Churchill. The Lancers of the Midwestern League are ranked sixth in the Class 4A coaches poll. "We'll find out what we're made of and we'll play them tough," Ashland first-year coach Don Senestraro said. "We have some good kids here and they're not going to back down from anything." Ashland (2-1) trailed 2-1 through three, but blasted home nine runs over the next three innings to break the game open. Steve Jorgensen's two-out base-clearing double in the fourth gave the Grizzlies a 7-2 lead and Tyler Fieguth singled in two more in the fifth to pad the lead. Aaron San Nicholas, Ashland's starting pitcher, added an RBI single in the sixth to complete the Grizzlies' scoring. Jorgensen, a senior shortstop, went 3-for-4 with a stolen base in the No. 3 spot, San Nicholas went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs and senior second baseman Jason Coburn went 2-for-4 with a triple. For Crescent Valley, pitcher Dave Galvan struggled at the mound but went 4-for-5 at the plate with a stolen base and a run scored. San Nicholas pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking three. He improved to 2-0. Junior Wes Dodds took over for San Nicholas in the sixth and sophomore Gus Gaviglio pitched the seventh. Dodds gave up two runs off three hits and a walk, while Gaviglio allowed three runs on four hits and a walk. Senestraro said he's still auditioning pitchers to iron out a rotation for Ashland's March 29 Southern Oregon Conference-opener. "(Gaviglio) is definitely our No. 2 pitcher, but behind that I don't know," said San Nicholas, Ashland's early-season ace. The Grizzlies' batting lineup and infield, on the other hand, look ready for SOC play. While the top of Ashland's order was merely adequate - Justin Meza and Sam Littleton combined to go 2-for-8 and score twice - the middle of its lineup had a field day. Jorgensen, senior Andrew Del Carlo, San Nicholas and Coburn combined for 10 of Ashland's 15 hits, including four for extra bases. Several were blasts, including Jorgensen's big hit, which came after singles by Robby Bruce, Ben Morris and Mesa. Fieguth's single, which squeezed through the left side of the infield, scored San Nicholas and Coburn to give the Grizzlies a 9-2 cushion. "Our bats are on fire," Fieguth said. "We're coming together real well, keeping up. Last year they didn't keep up too well, they'd fall flat and stuff, but now we're getting back together and it's getting real good." Ashland's defense wasn't spectacular, but didn't commit an error. Mesa started at third and Gaviglio at first. In the outfield, it was Morris in left, Littleton in center and Del Carlo in right. The Raiders of the Valley League fought back and had the tying run at the plate with two out and two on in the seventh. Gaviglio finished the deal by getting Joey Lakowske to ground out. Crescent Valley left two runners stranded in each of the last three innings. Today's Ashland-Churchill game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at North Mountain Park. The winner will play in the tournament championship game at 2 p.m. Thursday, while the loser will play in the third-place game at 11 a.m. Thursday. On the side of the bracket opposite Ashland are Gresham, Newberg, West Albany and Cleveland.
