He graduated high school in Berkeley, Calif. He Joined the Army Air Force in 1943. He flew 51 missions in B-17s over Ploesti and Eastern Europe in WWII. He fought bravely and was awarded the Silver Star. An excerpt from the award document reads "Displaying outstanding airmanship and determination, he gallantly continued through to the objective bringing his aircraft for a highly successful bombing run, inflicting grave damage to vital enemy installations. Despite continued savage resistance by the enemy after leaving the target area, Lt. Mainwaring though suffering from intense pain, shock and loss of blood, courageously went to the aid of another crippled bomber and kept hostile aircraft from the area until friendly fighters appeared." He had a long successful career working for Standard Oil, the final decades as a fuel and lube engineer. He belonged to the Ashland Lions Club, 99th Air Force Bomb Group, Purple Heart Assn., Quiet Birdmen, Chevron Retirees Association, and Free Masons. He leaves behind his wife of 71 happy years, Pauline M. Mainwaring. He was the beloved father of three successful children; Norman Robert Mainwaring, Susan Marie Barrett, and Paul Roderick Mainwaring. He will be greatly missed by his two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
