Alan Panebaker | Ashland Daily Tidings As Fred Stockwell flew over New Orleans during the first week of October, the most memorable thing he can think of — besides the turbulence ruining most of his shots — was the silence. As he thought about the fact that, beyond the noise of the Cessna 172 he was flying in, there was not a sound below. “All of the sudden the engine stops, and I realized it’s dead quiet,” Stockwell said. “I thought, ‘this place is now empty.’ We had been flying for 30 miles, and there was nobody below us.” Then Stockwell began to think about how the city was going to be rebuilt. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Stockwell was shocked, but as a freelance photographer, he felt the need to go there. As soon as he could, he flew to Louisiana, got in touch with the pilot and spent two days shooting aerial photos of the devastation. A well-known Ashland-based British photographer, Stockwell went to New Orleans because it is in his self-proclaimed job description. “I’m a freelancer, so I though that was the place to be,” he said. “Wherever there’s something going on, I love to be there.” Though Stockwell has shot photos around the world —including Guanajuato, Mexico (Ashland’s sister city), and Brazil — New Orleans after Katrina was like nothing Stockwell had ever seen.
