It's also a reminder that one of the worst things you can do for deer is feed them. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease is showing up in the Ashland area, although only a few cases have been reported. The virus first was identified two decades ago in California, and spread from there to Central and Southwest Oregon. The cause remains unknown, and outbreaks of the disease are unpredictable. Symptoms of AHD include foaming at the mouth or drooling, rapid or mouth breathing and general weakness. The disease can kill a deer three to five days after exposure. Sometimes large outbreaks occur; in other years, cases are sporadic, and biologists don't know why. This much is known, however: AHD, as well as other diseases affecting deer, can spread rapidly when the animals are in close contact with each other. Deer in their natural habitat do not cluster together. Urban deer herds, however, tend to congregate — especially when humans put out food for them. That's a big reason for the city of Ashland's 2012 ordinance that can result in a hefty fine if anyone is found to be feeding deer. Residents have complained of aggressive deer threatening them, and deer are a nuisance when they snack on vegetable and flower gardens, too. There is no magic solution, but not feeding them is a good start.
