The grant awards recently were presented to applicants during a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort Conference Center in Canyonville. Grants given to local groups included $5,000 to Southern Oregon University Youth Programs for the Native American Youth Academy; $10,000 for a technology project for English as a Second Language students at Jefferson Elementary School; $10,000 to the Rogue Valley Community Development Corporation for a low income housing renovation project; $19,000 to Pacifica for a horticulture project with area schools; $20,000 to the Illinois Valley Community Response Team for high school computer lab upgrades; $16,500 to the Sunny Wolf Community Response Team for a teen center; $2,475 to St. Vincent de Paul for an employment assistance project and $7,380 to Rogue Music Theatre for summer camp scholarships benefiting low income students. Since the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation's inception in 1977, the organization has given grants totaling more than $1.9 million. The foundation's mission is to offer assistance to benefit youth education and programs, strengthen families and improve the quality of life for people living in Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Deschutes, Lane and Coos Counties.
