Very few people know that Robert E. Lee and several Confederate officers approached the Confederate Congress before Fort Sumter was fired upon and urged them to free the slaves before initiating hostilities. Lee and his supporters argued the obvious immorality of slavery. Lee stressed that freeing the slaves would rob the Union leaders of their prime motivator. He claimed it would take away the Northerners’ reason to fight. Lee was told by Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Congress that freeing the slaves would have to be a gradual 20-year project in order to prevent economic decline. In the film “Gettysburg” one particular scene caught my attention. A Confederate officer was depicted explaining the South’s ideological position to a British observer using a poignant analogy. He told the observer to imagine a gentlemen’s social club. After a period of time some of the members realized they had nothing in common with the other members and even found them repugnant. They therefore politely resigned their membership and formed their own club offering friendship and cooperation on all levels. The old club members say they cannot leave while expounding freedom at the same time. In fact they say they will imprison or kill them if they try to leave. That was hypocritical. We are supposed to be free but we are not. We are “free” as long as we “obey” the federal government. So here it is, fellow Oregonians. I can’t think of a single thing the federal government does for us here in Oregon we can’t do for ourselves and better. All the federal government does is start wars and tax us. I don’t want to follow the directions of a corrupt government 3,000 miles away. I don’t want to listen to a spoiled, arrogant Texas oil millionaire telling us what to do. I don’t want power-hungry, greedy, lobby-controlled idiots dictating Oregon policy. The federal government is not flexible. Democracy does not work for 50 states. There are too many places and ways to hide money, power and corruption. Maybe democracy can work for one state. We need to leave. We need to politely resign our club membership. Of course they will send overpaid, high-tech, well-trained and conditioned thugs from New York, Texas, Alabama, Nevada, etc. to force us to stay in the club. Let’s leave anyway or we’re doomed to “baa” like sheep forever. Let’s do a civil disobedience Gandhi on them. No violence but no cooperation. Let us secede from the Union. Let us be free. Good luck.
