Jud Schwartz of Ashland-based Beach Avenue Productions, is producing the event. Those attending the event will be immersed in the worlds of the healing arts and medicine from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. There will be 87 booths, representing a wide range of healing modalities. Talks and workshops conducted by 63 presenters will be offered at various locations around the grounds and in classrooms. Lecturers will alternate with performers on the main stage. Drs. Deepak Chopra and Bernie Siegel will give the keynote addresses. Siegel will speak from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Saturday on the theme, "What is Wellness?" With degrees from Colgate University, Cornell Medical College and surgical training at Yale, Siegel has been one of the most persuasive advocates of complementary and alternative medicine for almost three decades. Since retiring from clinical practice as a pediatric and general surgeon in 1989, he has focused on humanizing medical care and teaching other healthcare professionals about the mind-body connection. His first book, "Love, Medicine and Miracles," sold more than 2 million copies and went to number one on the New York Timers Bestseller List. "If you act as if you're the person you want to become, you become that person," Siegel says. "Act as if the immune system of performers changes: it's up when they are acting in comedies, down when they are acting in tragedies." Recognizing that animals and children know how to live, Siegel recommends that we bring out the child in one another using humor. As an example, Siegel suggests wearing a bracelet with the letters WWLD on it: What Would Lassie Do? "Get a pet and learn from him." Chopra will speak from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday on the topic of human potentiality and the nature of reality. Chopra, formerly the chief of staff at Boston Regional Medical Center, built a practice as an endocrinologist and taught at Tufts University and Boston University Schools of Medicine. He now teaches other physicians at The Chopra Center For Well Being, with continuing medical education credits being granted by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He has written more than 45 books, and is an international speaker. "Human evolution is very much accelerated in our times," Chopra says. "This is due to the Internet, reading, participating in groups - neural networks of the planetary mind. I think the human being is poised for the next phase of its evolution: ESP, intuition, creativity unsurpassed, the ability to manifest the miraculous." During the World Wellness Weekend, Ashland Family YMCA will host Healthy Kids activities all day, and provide childcare. Among the sponsors for the weekend event are Horizon Institute, Jefferson Public Radio, Ashland Food Co-op, Juice Plus, Project A, Phone Directories Company, the Ashland Daily Tidings, the Mail Tribune, Ashland Community Hospital and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce. Part of the proceeds will benefit the SOWAC Microenterprise Development Center, whose mission is to help people start, expand, or improve their small business by offering practical hands-on business training, technical assistance and loans.
