CRIME Ashland man sentenced for chasing transient with knife Defendant also assaulted inmate while in jail Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Jun. 7, 2015 at 4:29 PM By Local report Posted Jun. 7, 2015 at 4:29 PM » Social News An Ashland man who suffers from mental health issues was sentenced Wednesday for chasing a transient with a knife and assaulting a fellow inmate while being held in Jackson County Jail. Kevin Alan Rollins, 34, who is homeless, was sentenced in Jackson County Circuit Court to three years probation. He faces a sentence of 14 months in prison if he does not comply with the conditions of his probation, which include taking his mental health medications and complying with the instructions of his mental health care providers. Rollins pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon after he got in an argument Feb. 3 with a transient, then chased the man down North Main Street in Ashland with an open knife and into a convenience store. Charges of attempt to commit second-degree assault, menacing and disorderly conduct were dismissed in a plea agreement. Rollins also pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault for a March 3 attack on another inmate while he was being held in jail. Another charge of disorderly conduct was dismissed. Rollins was held in jail with no bail after chasing the transient with the knife. His defense attorneys said Rollins is very intelligent, with a few years of college and art training under his belt, but he struggles with mental health problems when he is not on medication.
