This year, the four plays were selected out of nearly 200 submissions from around the nation. "The number was a little low this year," says ANPF Marketing Director Elizabeth von Radics. "But we've already exceeded that many for next year's festival."  Community volunteers narrow the scripts down in two rounds of reading, with the final 12 submitted to ANPF Artistic Director Douglas Rowe. Rowe — in collaboration with four directors — selects the final four. The playwrights' names are not revealed until the final scripts are chosen. The 2014 winners are James Harmon Brown of Los Angeles for "The Groyser," Bob Clyman of North Caldwell, N.J., for "A Little Quid Pro Quo," Michale Edan of Southfields, N.Y., for "Homecoming," and Jack Karp of Brooklyn, N.Y., for "Irreversible." "Last year, one of the winning playwrights was Richard Manley, who wrote 'A Question of Words.' The play was picked up by Camelot Theatre to be produced in February," von Radics says. The festival kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, when ANPF's Theatre Talk host John Rose sits down with Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Dan Donohue. The conversation should offer a look at ways Donohue's life merges with his creative process, skill and inspiration, along with the art, craft and nature of theater. The talk will be held at Dancing People Company Studio, 310 Oak St., Ashland. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at www.ashlandnewplays.org. Donohue starred in the title role of OSF's "Richard III" this season. In 11 years at the repertory theater, his roles have included Hamlet, Iago, Caliban, Mercutio, Mark Antony and a three-year cycle as Hal in "Henry IV: Parts One and Two" and "Henry V." His other theater credits are too numerous to name. The staged readings will be held Wednesday through Sunday, Oct. 22-26, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St. Readings of each play will be presented at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased through Oct. 22 at www.ashlandnewplays.org or at Paddington Station, 125 E. Main St. John Stadelman directs Clyman's "A Little Quid Pro Quo," the story of two friends' ongoing argument over altruistic versus egocentric motives. The cast includes Mauro Hantman, Al Espinosa, Rachael Warren, U. Jonathan Toppo and Holly Weber Neimark. Brown's "The Groyser" is about a Holocaust survivor trying to be understood by her husband and children. Kenneth Albers directs, and the cast is Catherine Lynne Davis, John Pribyl, Dee Maaske, Jeremy Thompson, Monique Robinson and Albers. Barzin Akhavan directs "Homecoming," an ironic tale that brings a disabled Iraq War veteran home — and into his civilian reintegration process — on Thanksgiving Day. Peter Wickliffe, Christine Albright, Catherine E. Coulson, Doug Rowe, Mickey Rowe and Olena Hodges make up the cast. Karp's "Irreversible" is a look at Robert Oppenheimer and his brother, Frank, who are frantically working to beat the Nazis to the nuclear bomb in 1944. Catherine Lynn Davis directs. The cast includes Geoffrey Riley, David Wood, Vilma Silva, Tony DeBruno, Caitlin Lushington, Catherine Lynn Davis and Albers. The festival also includes a play-writing workshop led by 2008 ANPF winner E.M. Lewis from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Campbell Center, 655 Frances Lane, Ashland. The cost is $10.
