Those of you who know Sarah, know that she is clearly capable of expressing herself quite well in many ways. In a true learning community, all members' thoughts and ideas are essential; therefore, I submit this letter at her request and with my support. - Martha Phelps Cotton Dear Mr. Editor, My name is Sarah Grace Cotton-Honeywell. I am a third grader at Lincoln Elementary School. My mom read me your opinion about closing Lincoln and having only three elementary schools in Ashland. I don't agree with you. A school is like a community, like a family. Most of the time we don't fight, instead we play and learn. The love that goes around a school, my school, is what makes it special. From Lincoln School for field trips, I have walked to these places: Siskiyou Boulevard, the Ashland Public Library, Mountain Avenue Park, Garfield Park, Glenwood Park, the Fire Station, the Plaza, the Recital Hall and Art Museum at the University, Ashland Senior High, Ashland Middle School, my own neighborhood, and HOME. If I have to go to Walker, Bellview or Helman school, I won't be able to walk to very many of these places without it being a REALLY LONG WALK. It would be a shame to have to drive to school. I figure that other schools are special too. A lot of kids love those schools like a lot of children love Lincoln. If you, and people like you, close Lincoln School, there will be many disappointed kids. I will feel sad and a little bit mad. I'll feel mad because it seems like you grown ups haven't really looked at how many of us love Lincoln. I think you should start asking kids for their ideas. After all, without us, what's the point of any schools anyway? Oh, and one more thing, my third grade class at Lincoln is big enough that we not only have a soccer team, we have two, all girls teams with a great Lincoln parent as a coach. We also have art programs, special science stuff, talent shows, dancing, a choir, and an orchestra - all with plenty of kids in them. Maybe you should check your facts! Picture a school with 246 people playing and learning in it. Then, come by Lincoln and meet our community of (211 kids, 18 teachers, and 17 support staff) really cool people who help our school. These are my words.
