COLLEGE WRESTLING Southern Oregon bolsters future with 2014 recruiting class Ritchey pleased with 18-wrestler haul that includes 17 freshmen By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 6:23 pm By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 6:23 pm » Social News His squad locked and loaded for what is expected to be another strong showing at the NAIA national championships, Southern Oregon wrestling coach Mike Ritchey recruited this year with an eye toward 2015 and beyond. Eighteen commitments later, he likes the look of that future. "We feel that our commitment to recruiting regionally, as well as in the state of Oregon, is paying dividends in our recruiting efforts," Ritchey said. "With a strong returning team it will be interesting to see if the new guys will have an immediate impact, but they all have potential to see some time in a Raider singlet eventually." Ritchey announced the bumper crop that is his 2014 recruiting class on Monday, a collection that includes 17 freshmen. Fourteen of the newbies hail from either Oregon or California, and one is from Russia. Perhaps the best of the bunch, and the one who likely has the best chance at making an immediate impact on a 2014-15 Raider team that includes five All-Americans, is Grants Pass alum Casey Coulter. The two-time Class 6A state champion, who’s projected to wrestle at 125 pounds at SOU, won 148 of his 155 high school matches from his sophomore season on, including 71 pins, and was a USA Wrestling Academic All-American as a senior. Coulter rolled through the 113-pound division at state as a senior, winning his three matches by a combined score of 22-2, and also won the 106-pound 6A state title as a sophomore. Coulter isn’t the only former state champion Ritchey corralled. Roseburg 184-pounder Max Hane, who went 36-6 as a senior, and Oregon City alum Kyle Sether (149) will also be representing the Raiders in the near future. Hane won the 182-pound 6A state title as a senior and is also an Oregon State Greco state champion as well as a Reeser’s Tournament of Champions winner. Sether, who is transferring from Notre Dame College (Ohio) after redshirting last season, won the 126-pound state title in 2013, placed third at 120 as a junior and dominated the 103-pound state championship bracket as a sophomore. Hidden Valley graduate Bradley Hyatt, who will likely wrestle at 197 at SOU, placed fourth in the 4A state championships as a senior and won a regional championship. Sether won’t be the only former Oregon City star to join the Raiders, as Ritchey has also landed Tanner Fischer (184), who placed second at state as a senior, and Devin Poppen (133), a three-time state runner-up. Poppen lost in the state final in three different weight classes, including a 5-2 setback versus Coulter in the 2012 106-pound final. The other in-state additions are Ryan Jurgens (197) from Sherwood and Alejandro Sandoval (285) from Canby. Jurgens placed third at the Class 5A state meet at 195 as a senior, and Sandoval was last year’s Class 6A state heavyweight runner-up. Ritchey also brought in a former Washington state champion (Matthew Floresca, 133); from California a former sectional champion (Chase Gildea, 174) and a second-team all-state wrestler (Lorenzo Landeros, 149); and, from Hawaii, a Western Division champion (Pablo Gonzalez) and a state champion (Christian Natividad, 125/133). Also joining SOU will be Russian Sabir Rasulov of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. Rasulov, a 2010 high school graduate, is projected to wrestle at 184 pounds for the Raiders. "We're excited to add a lot of quality incoming freshmen to the program. They are excellent students as well as dedicated wrestlers," Ritchey said. "We're committed to the mission of the University to keep the wrestling program at maximum capacity." Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-776-4469 or [email protected].
