Photos by Kara Q. Lewis | Ashland Daily Tidings By Rich Rosenthal For the Tidings The Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team halted a four-game skid and moved back into Cascade Conference south division title contention Friday with a surprising 5-1 triumph over Corban College at University Field. The Raiders (2-4, 1-2 CC), who entered the contest without a goal in 425 game minutes dating back to the season-opener, scored on three of their first five shot attempts and handed the perennial league powerhouse Warriors (2-4-1, 1-2) the school’s most lopsided setback in over two seasons. Versatile junior Lindsey Karsten, a marking back making her first career start at center forward, banged home SOU’s first two goals in the sixth and 18th minutes, then recorded a second-half assist en route to a career-best offensive outing. Sophomore all-star midfielder Kara Bradach also scored twice and freshman midfielder Morgan Spencer notched her first collegiate goalie-beater for the Raiders, who won their fifth straight contest on the Ashland pitch. “This was obviously a big win for us, and I thought it was one of the best all-around performances for a SOU team,” sixth-year Raider coach Jose Chavez said. “We were all frustrated by our slow start and we proved that we’re capable of playing at a much higher level than what we’ve displayed up until today.” SOU sophomore forward Brei McCoy (No. 10) with teammate Morgan Spencer (13). Bolstered by flawless passing, Southern cashed in on its second, third and fifth shot attempts in the opening 29 minutes en route to a 3-0 halftime advantage, and Bradach kept momentum going and boosted the lead to 4-nil 6:24 into the second stanza. Looking sluggish until about the 55th minute, the Warriors spoiled the shutout when sophomore midfielder Allison Buswell converted a close-range blast in the 59th frame in the midst of a seven-shot Corban burst, but Bradach answered and capped the scoring in the 82nd frame when she stole the ball from Kathleen Studenny near midfield and fooled goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall from 15 yards out on the breakaway. Corban finished with an 18-11 edge in total shots, but SOU shut off the opportunistic Warrior diagonal passing game for much of the game with deft tackling. Sophomore goalie Melanie Hopkins earned her sixth career victory with a career-best 10 saves. Southern continues a five-game homestand at 1 p.m. Saturday against Warner Pacific. Women’s Volleyball At Caldwell, Idaho, Nicolette Le Bel had a match-high 13 kills as 14th-ranked Southern Oregon coasted to an easy 30-21, 30-16, 30-20 victory over Albertson College in a Cascade Conference volleyball match at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center on Friday. The Raiders (11-3, 3-1 CC) methodically took the hosts out of their rhythm, mixing up a bevy of outside blasts and inside dinks to avenge a three-game loss to Albertson in Caldwell last year. Southern excelled in the passing department all night, racking up 66 digs — led by Kristin Lilly’s 17. The Raiders allowed only three Coyote (6-3, 3-2) aces — holding down the top serving team in the league. Albertson was led by the eight kills from Kathryn Ely, but the freshman had just two kills after Game 1. The ’Yotes victimized themselves with 10 service errors, eight receiving errors and a poor overall passing night. Shanna Claflin added 10 kills for the victors, while setter Jamie McCreary had 37 assists, nine digs, and three aces. SOU continues its weekend road trip Saturday against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, at La Grande.
