Public art graces the Ashland Watershed I attended a dedication of the installation of the third piece of public art in the Ashland watershed on Friday, July 6. I didn’t really know what to expect. I didn’t know any public art even existed “up in the woods”. I was delightfully surprised by the work of art, “Elevation,” by Cheryl Garcia. It held three bright blue birds directing people into the watershed. The birds were on the wing and flying up into the forest. After the dedication, I followed t

In 1994, and again in 1997, Oregonians enacted the Oregon Death with Dignity Law (ODDL). Look at the website, www.deathwithdignity.org, for an excellent overview of the legal parameters and political aspects of this law. Whatever your personal point of view on this topic, it’s a good idea to become familiar with how it actually functions in our state. There is a lot of misunderstanding and confusion, as well as welcome relief, that we are one of three states, along with Washington and Ver

Roe v Wade at risk Roe v Wade, 1973, legalizing abortion, is at risk if Trump replaces Kennedy’s seat on the Supreme Court before the November election. Fifty years of work went into that bill. Women in poverty and of color would suffer the most; it would be back to coat hangers to abort. Losing Roe vs Wade must not happen, and we must take action. Here’s how: Urge our senators not to move forward with any Supreme Court nominee until after the election. We want all senators to hold that line. In

Tariffs won’t protect The Trump administration would like us to believe that tariffs will protect workers and U.S. businesses. Not so. They will cut into corporate profits somewhat, but mostly they are a tax on consumer goods. As the costs of goods increase, everyone will have to pay more. Then there will be a slowdown in protection as some won’t be able to afford the new prices. This is what happens when you need revenue but have cut taxes on the wealthy without being able to raise taxes elsewh

When William Henry "Bill" Cosby burst onto the comedic scene at the Gaslight Cafe in New York City in the early 1960s, he was almost an immediate sensation. His comedy about his experiences growing up, and his sharp humor about a working-class childhood in Philadelphia, has always been considered one of the building blocks of the culture of stand-up comedy — a genre that was itself in the early stages of evolution into an art form at that time. Over the years, Cosby became an institution

He just finished his second novel, “Edgar and Lucy,” which will be published by St. Martin’s Press in 2017. Lodato, 45, a full-ti

It’s (really) hard to swallow, but smoky summers are here to stay across the West. It may not be every year, but with nearly half of all wildfire acres burned in the U.S. over the past couple decades attributed to human climate change, things are only getting smokier. And while we need to support efforts to make our forests healthier and proactively use controlled burning under mild conditions, it will take time before we get ahead of a problem that’s taken well over 100 years to develop. That’s
