The democratic world is burning, and we have a president obsessed with a purely symbolic, trivial, and politically manipulative fight over a wall — a giant piece of concrete that he laughably promised would be paid for by Mexico. You can surely be entertained by President Trump’s encounter Tuesday with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. At issue was money for Trump’s border monstrosity. You could say Pelosi and Schumer won since they trapped Trump into saying th

A decrease of about $125,000 in city revenues from bed and meal taxes over the summer is likely due to a reduction of visitors due to wildfire smoke in that period, City Council members agreed at their Dec. 3 study session. The transient occupancy tax (TOT) was down about 5 percent for the quarter, which translates to a decrease of around $45,000 in the general fund. This won’t impact this budget cycle because the cost can be absorbed, Mark Welch, financial director, said. That’s des

More than a year ago, when the Legislature passed a bill to create a program allowing cities to kill urban deer, Mayor John Stromberg declared flatly that euthanizing deer wouldn’t work, and that city residents would never stand for it. State Rep. Pam Marsh suggested at the time that the discussion would be “huge,” and city residents would probably decide against it, but the option should be debated and decided by the community. On Friday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wild

For all the talk about opioid addiction and the need to address it, an audit by the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office shows the state lags far behind others in preventing abuse. The biggest problem appears to be weaknesses in Oregon’s prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) operated by the Oregon Health Authority. The program should allow the state to share information about potential abuse with health licensing boards and law enforcement, but state laws prevent the OHA from doi

Democracy: sold Unregulated capitalism destroys democracy. It voraciously buys politicians, governments, and media propaganda outlets in pursuit of profit. Polluting our air, water, and food are acceptable behaviors. Capitalism is short-sighted with no aspirations to morality, rationality or making a better world. Indeed, behaviors serving such goals are discouraged. Capitalism is much like Trump. Oddly, “small government” representatives reap large bonuses from their corporate donor

Seeking impartiality Where did the notion of impartial and fair reporting go? I don’t see impartial reporting on the major TV news networks nor in print. Being fair-minded, I always thought two sides to any noteworthy story need to be presented to make an informed decision. When a news outlet allow their political, religious or personal beliefs to dictate what readers need to read, the idea of impartiality vanishes. Remember what Joseph Goebbels (Hitler’s propaganda minister) wrote,

Comedy is inherent in improv, says Cil Stengel, cofounder of The Hamazons. “It’s inherent because audiences enjoy watching people who are out on a limb,” she says. “Tension builds when a performer is in a bit of trouble or confusion, and laughter releases that tension.” Wit, good listening skills and teamwork are the tricks — or gems — of good improv, Stengel continues, while high expectations are risky. Performers can’t be afraid of falling on the

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Dorothea Lange lived and worked in San Francisco taking studio portraits of the city’s prominent residents. However, with the onset of the Great Depression she set out to create a photographic record of those countless Americans who were faced with few options other than to endure what was a period of unrelenting economic hardship. She took a job as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, a New Deal agency. In 1936, Lange was in Nipomo, C

For years before he was stuffed and put on display at the Elks Lodge in Ashland, a seven-point elk known as Teddy Roosevelt was a key attraction at Ashland’s Lithia Park Zoo. According to an old Lodge Bulletin, a group of Elks bought Teddy from a California game farm and presented him to the city of Ashland. However, an article in the Ashland Daily Tidings, Jan. 10, 1936, states that Teddy was born in Lithia Park on July 8, 1922. By age 13 Teddy had grown so mean that the zoo decided to re

Social media concerns I am writing you to express my concern about social media in elections and what problems it causes. I think it is important to our country because on internet we say things the we wouldn’t say to someone in real life. It think we should put limits on what we say during elections. Plus, people sometimes post who they voted for and this can cause conflict among friends and family. Family and friends can get mad at this because they have different opinions. I think as ci

Dr. Karen Grove held audience members of her recent library talk on the edge of our seats. In a truncated version of the course she will teach at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Southern Oregon University in the spring, she guided us through layer by layer of local sedimentary rock, explaining the geological history of the Rogue Valley. She mentioned her fall 2018 geology course: “Billions of Years of Climate Change on Earth.” My ears perked up; might Karen have recommend
