A review of the available newsletters circulated
by the Southern Area Council covering Los Angeles and vicinity
reflects the following activity of the Mattachine Society and
the Mattachine Society, Inc. and its chapters:
Newsletter l/l/5h reflects that the California State
Dept. of Health made an inquiry of the Society for assistance A
in curbing venereal disease among sexual variants. It also
reflects that a research project was being conducted by
Research Chapter #lOh entitled, "Lesbian Research Program,"
wherein it was announced that this program was being conducted
in cooperation with volunteer psychologists, and that the
Society was assisting in every way possible. Also announced
was a blood bank party which was organized by the Southern
Area Council for the purpose of donating blood to the hemophilia
fund. The balance of the letter contains notes concerning the
activities of the various chapters in the Los Angeles area;
a reprint from an article in "Time Magazine" of 12/28/53
captioned, "The Hidden Problem" which dealt with the murder of
his parents by a homosexual; and a book review of the book, The
Heart in Exile." This letter also notes attention being given
to the problem of homosexuals in London, England, and some dis-
cussions which have occurred in the English Parliament,
Newsletter 3/1/SM announces that the Mattachine
Society was supporting a legal case involving a technical
point of law and appeals for funds. It also contains an
article on who must register under the state or city law
requiring the registration of sexual deviates, plus general
notes concerning the activities of chapters and the Area
Councils.
Newsletter 4/1/5U notes that funds were needed to
prepare transcripts on the "Slade Case" which was being testedin the courts and which the Mattachine Society, Inc. was <LEL-
supporting. It also notes that Dr. WAEpELL§Q§MEROY, asitantto_pr. ALE5gQj$i§§1; was in Los Ageles and had been in
consultatio with representatives of the Mattachine Society
in connection with a survey being made by Dr. KINSEY to be
published under the title, "The Sex Offender and the Law."

As if this stranglehold on the training ground of youthwere not
enough, a council to nance higher education was created by officials of
the Ford, Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Alfred&#39;P. Sloan foundations, each
of which contributes $60, 000 annually to its upkeep. The money, strangely
enough, goes not to. direct support of higher education, but to_pay a Astaff which advises corporations on how to spend their money, and
colleges and universities on how to get it.  !

As a result of these "subsi fzed studies, Dr. Kinsey&#39;s book,
Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, was able to stun the American
public with somehighly startling "revelations. " A few of these include

If anyone maintains that the money and influence behind some of
the major foundations dealing in foreign relations could not affect the _ -
decisions of certain government officials in the performance of their .
duties, then he is not facing facts. As far back as a quarter of a 
century ago, the~&#39;Ca__rnegie Endowment for International Peace was &#39;~:, &#39; ,-
boasting that it had become "an unofficial instrument of internati0na1"*
policy, taking up here and there the ends and threads of international 7
problems and questions which the governments find it difficult to handle,
and through private initiative reaching conclusions which are not of a
formal nature but hich tmofficially find their way into the policies ofgovernments." 1? Nor was this boast an empty or meaningless one.
2:5 individual who has made a study of the activities of the Rockefeller
Foundation, for instance, has credited it with exerting the pressure
that led to the recognition of Soviet Russia by the United States during
the 1930s. His reason for the pressure? Standard Oil&#39;s desire to
negotiate oil contracts with the Soviet leaders. 2! As will be brought
out later, under the individual organizations, wholesale lots of officials
or trustees of various foundations have been--or are--employed by the
United States Department of State.

never heard of aw club of the type indicated by the description of subject

_ When I was at the barber&#39;s recently a man came into the store,
introduced himself politely, and asked those present for permission to ask
them questions. He asked about all sorts of things. He wanted to know how I
often and how much meat was eaten, how much one&#39;s weekly salary amounted to,
whether one shaved every day, when and against whom a new war was to be
expected, whether women teachers should remain single, who had the greatest
prospects of being elected President, and a great man other things.
The interrogator was a man who was employed by a concern which is
doing research on the attitude of the people and preparing statistics on this.
The value of these official inquiries may be overestimated or underestimated,
but it is certain that the results of such a poll of private citizens have
gained an important place in the life of America.
Politicians especially lend an attentive ear to the voice of the
people. Hence election years are good times for institutes for research on
public opinion. Many Congressmen even--éby paying for it, naturallye-ascertain
their election prospects themselves. If the results are unfavorable, then
naturally they will not be published. The average limit of mistakes in pre-
dicting election results amounted to only 4%. It will, therefore, be quite
interesting to follow the vacillations of popular opinion this year in the
newspapers according to the figures. "
The number of agents which the firms are using fo listening to
the population often amounts into the hundreds. Cften, too, advertising
businesses took part in the mass interviews. All classes of the population
are questioned so that the answers coming from 3,000 to 50,000 persons repre-
sent a miniature picture of,Amrica._ The two best-known experts in the fieldof the voting are Messrs.>§allup and%bper. _/I
Science too makes use of the methods of mass interrogation for its-purposes. Profatinsey and his co-workers recently published a book on thesexual life of e American man, which is based on the answers of 12,000
persons. As experts assure us, the important and sensational results of thiswork of research could scarcely have been achieved in any other way.

ago which are to be reproduced partly here. The poll was concerned with the
