On January 24, 1936 a jury at St. Paul, Hinnesota
returned a verdict of guilty as to the three defendants who were
on trial at that point. Harry Sawyer and William Weayer were imme-
diately sentenced to life imprisonment. Judge Nordbye of the
United States District Court deferred sentence as to Cassius McDonald
until February l, 1936. A stay of execution was granted as to all
of the defendants until January 31, 1936, and it is the desire of
the Judge and the United States Attorney to have certain inquiries
made at Detroit, Michigan as to the mental capacity of McDonald,
prior to his being sentenced. This request has been made of the
Detroit Office and the investigation is proceeding at that point.
In compliance with your pen consents appearing on a
teletype from the St. Paul Office dated January 22nd to the effectthat~the B eau be furnished information given by Dolores£Delaney "*and ynonagurdette as to the facts which will assist in further
search for the remaining subjects in this case, I have been informed
by Special Agent K. R. Mclntire, who recently returned from St. Paul,
that this information is being forwarded as quickly as possible.
You will be advised of the complete statements of the aforementioned
persons immediately upon receipt thereof in the Bureau.

type of successful business man and a thoroughly well balanced person.
Rinck advised that McDonald told him that his office telephone number
in Detroit during 1931 was Randolph 3234. Later investigation revealed
that this telephone number is the office telephone number of Ed A. Lttix,

connected with the Bremer kidnaping case as the newspapers have said '

tain the names and addresses of McDonald's business associates, but
all parties interviewed advised that they knew oi no person who was
connected with Mcllomld in the lumber business._ All of the above men-
tioned parties advised that McDonald appeared to be a very wealthy .

The above mentioned parties advised that McDonald did not discuss
business but confined his conversation to variousjsports. All of ~

The reference letter from the Iashington Field Office con-
tains information rcceived from R. L. Nichols, a subject in the case en-
titled R. L. NICHOLS, with aliases, ET ¢I; UXLAT?UL FL'GHT TO aVOID
PROSECUTION, in which the Charlotte office is the office of origin. This
case arose out of a bank robbery in which Nichols participated at Mars Hi
N. C., and thereafter fled to the State of Tennessee. Nichols was appre-
hended by Bureau Agents at Marion, Va., on Dec. 24, 1935.

Upon receipt of the data from the Washington Field Office as
to Subject Karpis's alleged contacts at Knoxville, Tenn., this Agent immediat
ly communicated with Special Agent C. O. Pickard at Knoxville, Tenn., who
ascertained from Deputy Sheriff J. C. Chumlea, identification officer at
Knoxville, Tenn., that the Hitengale Club is a gambling and drinking road
house just outside of the city limits which is patronized by the better class#of people in92§;oxville, and owned principally by one Ikeihaldwell, CharlesRice, and Doc Ogle. Agent

a living. Charlie Rice and Boo Ogle have long
been recognized in East Tennessee as being connected with criminal opera-
tions in that section and to have operated slot machines. Agent Pickard
also recalled that Doc Ogle was under investigation a year or so ago for
having in his possession a number of stolen Government bonds which came
from a bank in St. Paul, Minn. At that time Ogle turned these bonds over
to Chief Deputy Sheriff Kirby of the Knoxville Police Department who in
turn wrote the Treasury Department for information concerning them. It
was in this manner that the bonds were located. Ogle was prosecuted for
this but claimed that he obtained th_ bonds by gambling without knowledge
of their stolen identity. It should be noted here that Chief Deputy Sheriff
Kirby obtained the information for Agent Pickard from Doc Ogle as to the
real identity of Subject Yichols "hich lead to his apprehension at Marion,
-=e__ e.--- Agen Pickard also recalled that several days prior to this--
information furnis ed by Subject Iichols Deputy Qheriff J. C. Chumlea had
stated that Harry, eardon, who formerly lived in Miami, Fla., and who re-
turned to Knoxvi-l , Tunn., in the summer of 1935, had informed Chumlea
that he saw Subject Karpis and recognized him in the Parks Hotel at Knoxville
about sixty days ago. According to Chumlea, Beardon stated he recognized
Karpis because he recalled seeing him in Miami, ?la., although he did not
know his identity prior to the time that Harpis and Campbell left there and
fled to Atlantic City, N. T. hr. Chumlea advised that Harry Beardon's
father is the house detective at the Parks Hotel and cannot be trusted and
is believed to be connected in criminal activities; also that the Parks
Hotel is a third rate establishment ind rss recently taken over bysone

On Dec. SO, 1935 this Agent, :ccomp*nied by Agents M. T.
Heekins, H. E. Peterson, and E. C. Dorris, proceeded to Knoxville, Tonn.,
where they were joined by Spucicl Agents C. O. Pickvrd, E. E. Diemer, ind
T. E. Rowe. On the nisht of Dec. 30, 1935 the writer, Agent R. E. Peterson,
ind Agent K. ". Keekins visited the Hitsngcle Club from 10 P. L. to 4 A. B.
The Nitenrnle Club is loc¢ted about six miles from Knoxville, Tenn., on the

had to be entered from the outside. It ras found to be a store room for
fruit and "hiskey and there were no doors leading out from it which fairly
well established that there rere no other rooms in the basement. In addition
to this, through general C0nVePS1ti0h with the raiters and the hostess
it was learned there rereno additional rooms in the bxsement nor any other
people present at the club at that time. It was also learned that Mr. Rice
was the only one of the owners :ho slept at the club and that the waiters
occupied the only other bed room therein, both of these rooms being upstairs.
A complete description of the inside of this club and the surrounding pre-
mises has been drasn up, 1 copy of which will be retained in the Nashville
file for further use and a copy of which is being forrarded tothe Charlotte
office-for its Qssistancc in questioning Subject Nichols who is to be re-
moved to Ashevillc, N. C., for prosecution.
On the morning of Dec. 51, 1935 information obtained relative
to the club and its description nas furnished to Special Agent H. A. Snow
at Roanoke, V%., in order that he could ag in interview Nichols. In the
meantime it had been learned that the club was ;ctu;lly operated by George
F. Ike! Caldwell, Charlie Kirby, and Charles C. Rice, and so far as could
be le:rned, Doc Oile had no connection with it. In view of the information
received as to the reli.bility of George F. Cald ell =nd the belief that
he rould not be guilty of harboring any criminal, the advisability of
directly approaching him nas discussed ind Agent Snox Tas requested to is-
certdin from Nichols vhothar Caldwell was in any ray connected with Kirpis
and his gang and knew Karpis's real identity. Agent Snov later advised
this Agent by telephone tn-t Nichols insisted that there were additionel
rooms in the basement of this club phere the gang hangs out and that the
gang ras supposed to be there that night. Nichols also informed Agent
Snow, then informed that we were unable to effect K;rpis's apprehension
__::ppon th3_information furnished by him, that he upon his removal to Asheville,
L.-vh. C., would arringe through his girl friend, Hazcfkiilton of 18 Ash St.,
Bristol, Va., to locate K rpis and other members of his gang so they could
be apprehended. Nichols also stated there zas working in the Nitengale
Club a Dagn knovn as Pitsfxiingo tho was wanted for bank robbery in Kansas
City, Ho. He also stated thzt Kzrpis and his crowd might hang out at Papa
Jack92McGi1l's, an individu"l weighing around 300 lbs. who operates a
tourist camp on the south edge of Knoxville and has some camps located in
a grove of trees.
After this information ras received from Nichols Special
Agents M. *. Lkekins and R. E. Peterson, ;ccompanied by Probation Officer
J. O. Stafford, ascertained that Jack McGill, tho weighs around 500 lbs.,
lived in a residence "herehc did some bootlegging on the north side of
Knoxville and does not operate a tourist camp on the south edge of that
city. Investigation 1t McGills home during the afternoon of Dec. 31, 1935
did not show any unusual activity and Probation Officer Svafford stated
he does not believe Jack McGill would harbor an individual like Karpis;
that "hile McGill Kill sell whiskey he does not believe he would be in-
volved in anyother crime as he has only recently completed a probation
sentence.

Special Agent C. O. Pickard learned from Miss Rosina Colgan,
a c erk in the U. S. Attorney's office, Nashville, Tenn., that Mrs. J.
E. ood, who is presently living in the Andrew Johnson Hotel, Knoxville,
nn., is-the owner of the home where the Nitengale Club is located.
Agent Pickard and the writer interviewed Lbs. "cod at this hotel in the
presence of her son, Tom Long, who is connected with the Decatur Motor
Co., Knoxville, and they advised that prior to Kay 25, 1955 Charlie
Rice had operated a night club known as the Bellvedere just outside of
the city limits of Knoxville; that this club was in close proximity of
the home of a resident who obtained an injunction against the club and
had it closed; that at this time Charlie Rice became interested in
renting her home which she refused to do. However, Rice later learned
that George F. Caldwell and Charlie Kirby were interested in a night
club and gambling establishment and approached them relative to renting
the "ood home. Lbs. Wood states that she then rented her place due to
financial difficulties to George F. Caldwell for a period of one year
