tion today joined in commend»
ing the Hearst newspapers for
their campaign to stir public
interest in the tight on crime.
They declared that the realistic
-photographs published yesterday
were serving a genuine public set
vice in focusing attention on this
ght.
PRAISE OF POLICE
In New York the pictures were
diswsseq by men like supreme
Court Justice Black. Police Com-
missioner Valentine, former Police
Commissioner M u l r o o ri e y and
Arthur Train, author and former
member of the staff of the district
attorney. ,
Theodore J. Roche, president of
the police commission of San Fran-
cisco, declared the vividness oi the
pictures would serve to show young
men and women that crime was
without clamor or allurement.
Following are some of the many
expressions oi opinion on the cam-
paign against crime:

words, and the publication of so

throughout the United States ls
bound to evoke the lrecnest inter-
est in this subject.
I hope the newspapers of Mr.
Hearst continue to give us more
of these pictures. They have iv.
subject, a, predicate, and an ob~
iect. They visualize better than
anythirrg also-i-not-what we are
up against in combattlng crime
and criminals."

a surgical postmortem.
Some of them are not nice to
SR. but all of them accentuate
the gravity of the crime pl&#39;0I!<-
lern. Gangsters and other anti-
social forces must be dealt with
ruthlessly by our law and order
agencies; It they have secret
alliances with political factions
these alliances should be ex-
posed. No quarter can be given
these public foes. Their elimi-
nation is one of our most realis-
tic problems.

result of publishing these pic-
tures, I believe, will be the rev.
elation they will bring to young
people who frequently overlook
where a life of crime leads to.
The pictures will bring home
to our citizens of tomorrow what
it means to use gun and pistol
ln robbery. It will mm their em.
bryonlc minds from the heroics
or the sltuajlon, and pave the
way for them to become» better
eltizens. The vlvldness of the
pictures will help protect them
against the snurem-em of crime
by the dramatic portrayal of its
fruits."

Justice crime cases, for possible use in the new
magazine issue for its New York and Chicago news~

. 0Please be informed that Dr. Charlegiéleischer, of
the Hearst Editorial Staff, New York City, was conducted through
the exhibit room and Identification Unit in accordance with your
oral instructions this date.
Dr. Fleischer was deeply and intensely interested in
all phases of the identification work. His fingerprints were
taken. He classified and searched a fingerprint, making an
identification, which pleased him tremendously. He was so
interested in the activities of the Identification Unit, as
explained by Hr. Edwards, that he used all of his available
time before reaching the laboratory, he having a previous
luncheon engagement at the Mayflower Hotel. He plans to re»
turn at some future date in order to finish the tour. He
desired that his appreciation be extended to you and to the
others of the Bureau whom he has met and to advise that he now
has a broader conception of the identification work of this
Bureau; also, that he is more&#39;eonvinced than ever that all
police work logically is a part of the Federal system of
Government and that he is going to try, editorially and
otherwise, to make the citizes of the United States con~
scious of this idea of his.

 and with tabulations with respect to bank robbery statistics, kidnsping statis~
" tics, extortion statistics and material concerning theft of Government weapons.
* I also Supplied Mr. Mooney with routine photographs of the Special Agents on
the range at Quantico, at the pistol range, views of the technical laboratory
and identification division. He was also furnished with copies of your recent
speeches and with e biographical sketch ad a copy of your photograph. Mr.
Mooney felt that he had all of the information which he required and the only
information he requested was whether it might be possible at a later date for
selected City Editors of newspapers to be included in training courses for the
purpose of becoming acquainted with the manner in which Speciallkgmts function
in the more important cases. I told him that while we were getting ready to
hold police training schools in accordance with the recent pronouncement of
the Attorney General, the matter had not progressed sufficiently at the present
time to indicate whether this might be possible. Mr. Mooney seemed delighted
to receive the detailed information concerning the Bureau and stated he would
review it and let you know if he desired any further data.

upon his return to the city and would advise Mr. Hanson of the
Net York Office as to whether this request could be complied with
and that he, Mr. Mooney, should keep in touch with Zr. Hanson. He

I rather doubt the advisability of going along with Er.
