"A young man introduced a PAUL KRASSNER to
the audience who inturn introduced an individual
by the name of ABBIE HOFFMAN. When HOFFMAN spoke
he was always between 20 and #0 feet from me. I
could always hear him clearly for he spoke into a
microphone. During the course of HOFFMAN's address
he advised the people gathered there how to make
Molotov Cocktails. HOFFMAN stated to "use a pop
bottle into which one should place a little bit of
dirt, a little bit of Ivory soap, add gasoline
and a long rag and then you stand by and wait for
a Pig's car to drive by and when he does you light
the'rag and then throw it at the Pig's car", _io
HOFFMAN continued by stating "in order to get rid
of "The Establishment" you should kill the Pigs,
kill your parents, and distroy your schools.
"HOFFMAN further advised those present to go
to Chicago and meet at Lincoln Park on the dates
of his trial and make a "people's park" of it. He
also advised the people present to go to Chicago
and demonstrate and fight the pigs at the
Federal Buildings "Just as was done a year ago and
if you can't go to Chicago go to Baltimore's
Federal Buildings and do the same thing." HOFFMAN
said "don't get locked up for disorderly conductdon't get locked up for inciting to riot, but get '
locked up for killing a pig." J
"HOFFMAN also stated he wished for all the
people present to be in Chicago for his trial.

The press conference broke off abruptly and Hoffman
and his group left the area imediately.
Approximately thirty individuals listened to his
press conference, most of whom were visitors to this National
Honuent. A Special Agent of the RBI observed the entire press
conference.
Hoffman again spoke at Lowell Lecture Hall, Harvard
University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, from approximately 7:30 P.M.
to 5:10 P.M.. on October 26, 1969.

were using "fun" as their defense. He said that fun was a sneaky
thing in the United States and it really scared people. He said
that he and his fellow defendants were on trial under the pro-
visions of the Civil Rights Act" which makes it a crime to
trerel interetete to incite, organize, promote, encourage
participants in and carry on a riot.
Hoffhan was accompanied by Leonard Ueinglaes and Jerry
Lescourt, who he described as defense attorneys for the Chicago
Eight. Ueinglass spoke briefly and stated that Federal Judge
Julius Hoffhln had comitted so much reversible error during
the trial to date that the defense attorneys were very pessimistic
about getting s reversal.

the brunt of Hoffman's attack was centered on the Chicago trial
of eight persons, including himself, charged with conspiracy
oto incite riot during the Chicago convention. He referred to
the trial as a "kangaroo court" and a "soap opera", stating it
was the first time in the history of the U.S. Government that
people were tried for a state.of.mind. _Hoffman also stated
Judge Hoffman chose the-lury members rapidly and unfairly. He
stated the eight were being tried without evidence and would
end up in prison just to scare the young people of the
country, and he compared the trial to the annihilation of the
Jews under the Nazi regime. Hoffman stated that out of the
_l5O_seate available in the court.room, only 12 were occupied by
his friends. He said the rest were taken by FBI men, policemen
and other agents, and statedihese measures were taken so the
defendants would be assured of a "fair and impartial trial."Hoffman boasted of the fact that he has had $0 arrests in the -"'1
past 10 years and has not "been put away yet , but said "we'll
go to prison on this one." He stated, " Sometimes I think the
Yippies are the only Americans left." He said they survive for
free and do not work because there are no Jobs worth doing."why work?", he said. "Give people what they want. . . let themachines do it."_ Hoffman called capitalism an economic Jungle
which has becqme obsolete," but later he appealed for "bread',

Froiaes said that the government has attempting to
show that he had persuaded three girls to place cheaical soaked
rags in hotel lobbies during the 1968 Democratic National
Convention, Other government witnesses testified as to Froines
knowledge in aching "stink bombs" and Froines said that it did
not take a PHD in Chemistry, which he had, to make stink bombs.
Froines said that Bobby Seale's Constitutional Rights
had been violated during the trial and how Seals was not allowed
to defend hi:se1f,' Froines remarked that they were very lucky
to have Judge Hoffman, who is 75-years-old, instead of Dr, Spock's
Judge, who was 83, He said Bobby Sea1e's trial, which he referred
to as "A Conspiracy of One", would be held in April, 1970. Froines
complained that the defendants in his trial had given Judge
Hoffman 45 questions to ash the jury as it was being selected,
but that Judge Hoffman only asked them one of them,"Can you be
fair?"
Froines stated that the Conspiracy 8 have printed a
leaflet listing the defendants and the charges against them and
that these leaflets tare on sale, Any money would go toward the
defense of the Conspiracy 8 and possibly nationwide coverage to
churches and schools when the Conspiracy 8 were sentenced. He
said he wished the people of the United States were his jury insead
of those who had been chosen.
Abbie Hoffman spoke during the last hour. His approach
ras much courser then Froineszzjheused profanity constantly. Many
in the audience left after Hofinan started speaking, He said that
1;3 govarazent was trying to convict him of conspiracy with an air-
plane ticket fro: San Francisco to Chicago and his being in a tree
-Lincoln Park as evidence and that most of the 8 did not even know
"each other before they were indicted. Also that Scale did not
know anything about what was happening_in Chicago until the day
before.

1962. From an initial ideological posture of "participatory
democracy, the current line of the national leadership reveals
an adherence to Marxism~Leninism. Michael Klonsky, National
Secretary, in March, 1969, celled for the building of e
revolutionary Marxist-Leninist movement. The urogram of SDS
has moved from involvement in civil rights struggles to an
anti-Vietnam wer position and finally to its present advocacy
of an anti-imperialist line, linking up the oppressed peoples
of Asia, Africa and Letin America with the black liberation
covenant in the United States, China, Vietnam and Cuba are
regarded as countries which are leading the world-wide struggles
against United States imperialism. On the other hand, SDS

an Associate Professor of Sociology at
Nohwestern University, Evanston, Illinois,
and an anti-war activist in the Chicago area.
The September 18, 1969 issue of the "Washington Square
Journal", a student newspaper of the New York University, wash-
ington Square campus, New York City, contained an agticle en-
titled "Chicago_In October - HOFFMAN Calls For More Demonstration:
which stated in part as follows:
"Yippie leader Ade Hoffman said Tuesday that he
expects some 500,000 supporters in Chicago Oct. 11 to protest
the indictment of him and seven other activists for conspiring
to cross stme lines to incite riots during the Democratic
Convention in August, 1968.
"Speaking to reporters outside the 3§9 LafayetteStreet office of the Conspiracy, the ne adoted by the
eight defendants, Hoffman called the Sept. 2 trial the
World Series of American InJu1ce'. The Chicago Con-
spiracy is playing against the Kangaroos, or Mayor Richard
Daly and the Chicago police, Hoffman said. He have only
eight; players, and they will all ply left field.

activity that occurred during the 1968_Democratic National
Convention DNC! in Chicago, Illinois, and to announce
planned activities to accompany the trial.
The news conference was attended by approximately
75 members of the news media. -

Eight trial, were also in attendance.
The attorneys observed that this was the first
prosecution under the Anti-Riot Laws Statutes of 1968, and
was the first time in history that people would be tried
for having a "state of mind" without accompanying overt
acts. It was observed that thisatabua of law constituted
animminant threat to freedom of everyone in the country
and that the trial would be directed to bring this point
across as well as to prove the city administration of
Mayor RICHARD J. DALEY of Chicago, with certain unidentied
members of the federal government, had actually conspired
to deter .e" and prevent demonstrations in ChiCag0 at the
time of the DAG in 1968. This activity was a true conspiracy
and those individuals should be criminally tried for the
results of their acts. -
WEINGLASS and KUNSTLER stated they had reason to
believe, and in fact, believed their phone lines had been
tapped by the federal government because, withinifive days
after they had talked with people concerning the conspiracy
trial, the FBI had called upon the people they had conversed
with.
The subject stated the defendants in the trial
represent not Just themselves but black liberation, cultural
revolution and new left political application,with all
people having the right of self determination.

Iew York City, on December l6, 1969, disclosed that the subject
runes to appear in Part 2B of the Criminal Court on December 8,
1969, for trial in connection with his arrest at Columbia University,
Iew York City, on April 30, 1968, by the IYCPD, on charges of
criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.
These records further disclosed that a bench warrant
was issued for the subject's arrest on December 8, 1969, for
failing to appear in the court, but that the warrant was stayed
until February ll, 1970. If the subJect does not appear for
trial on February ll, 1970, the court can direct that the bench

Court To Review Ruling Against Hoffman", which states as

review the flag-desecration conviction of Yippie leader
Abbie Hoffman.
"Hoffman was arrested hen2Oct. 3, 1968, when he
marched in a Capitol Hill protest wearing a shirt of red,
white and blue stripes that he said was commercially manu~
factured.
"The late Judge Andrew J. Howard Jr. of the Court
of General Sessions found offman, 32, guilty of desecrating
the flag, and sentenced him to pay a fine of $100 or serve 30
days in jail.
"That conviction was upheld by the D.C. Court of
Appeals, but Hoffman's lawyers asked the federal Court to
review the case.
"In a related action, the D.C. Court of Appeals
yesterw upheld the conviction of Thomas Wayne Joyce, who
was found guilty of desecrating a small American flag dur-
ing the inaugural parade last January. In affirming the
conviction, the Court relied on its own ruling in the
Hoffman case!
