On February 28, 1951, Mr. G. Burgess, Secretary of Embassy, of the
British Embasy of Washington, D. C. requested me to drive him toCharleston, South Carolina. He advised me that he did not have to
be in Charleston until Noon March 1, 1951. We left Washington, '
D. C. about 9:30 or 10:00 A. M. February 28 1951, with Hr. Burgessdriving a l9L1 Lincoln Continental with DQLl7L license plates.
Just beyong or South of the Highway Department weighing station at
Wbodbridge, Virginia, we were stopped by a Virginia_State Trooper,
whose name I do not know, and he advised Mr. Burgess that we were Vdriving 90 mph. The Trooper recognised Mr Burgess imunitglaildallowed him to continue on with the request that he-stay wit the
speed limit.
When we got about 8 miles North of Ashland we were passing an Army
Convoy and were stopped by another Virginia State Trooper and he
advised that he had checked us at 80 mph. Again Mr. Burgess il-
munity was recognized and we were allowed to proceed with e warning
to stay within the speed limit. '
we stopped at Ashland and had a Coco-cola and he requested me to
drive. I did, and we proceeded South through Petersburg on Route 301
When we were about 10 miles South of Petersburg we were stopped by
County Officerhp, of the Prince George County police,
and being the driver I was charged with speeding at 80 mph.
All during the time Mr. Burgess kept on telling me to step on it.
On several occasions I told him that we were going too fast and it
we were caught I would have to take the consequences. He told weeach time that he would take the responsibility and he had Diplomatic
immunity, and all the police would do would be to ask me to s ow
it down, and we would go on our way.
I am making this trip with Hr. Burgess at his expense. I have beenknowing him a long time, several {ears in fact, and I drive and tow
motor cars for Gilbert's Motor 3a es, Patterson, N. J. I didn't haveagything to do ton a couple of days and agreed to go with him on '

her GUY had suffered concussion of the brain when he fell down the stairs
at the Foreign Office in London about three years ago, and for this reason,
Mrs. BASSETT said that GUI should never drink potent beverages.

12, 1951, interview in a package of letters to be answered. The letter
was received by her at the end of April or beginning of May, 1951, a
few days after BURGESS telephoned to say goodbye. The envelope is not
available.
"Dear on I y
Just a short note following our telephone conversation to
return you your cheque. I hate having to borrow money in un-
forseen & unforseeable emergencies even from good friends & was
very glad I was able to avoid cashing it. However if you had not
*hsd the kindness to provide it I wld. have been very worried, being
with my mother & Fort Sumter being as expensive as it was. with
it there were no worries and we had a truly wonderful time and
indeed from our point of view the not yours I fear the car breakdown
was a blessing in disguise. It enabled us to spend a whole
week by forcing us! in Charleston & getting to know it a

and they did not know the latter. They stated that BURGESS impressed them
as being a rather weak character but had not the slightest intimation that
he harbor-Q sloyel opinions or was engaged in avw subversive enterprise
directed by Moscow. They advised that BURGESS mother and stepfather are
very conservative and did not share his liberal political views.
