. 4 'A check of Bureau files does not indicate that wehave had any contact with Chancellor. There is a referencewhich indicates that in December, 1964, he was one of six

In February, 1965, information was received that the Cuban_ Government denied them visas and there is no indication they
actually went to Cuba.

Personnel Clearance Lawpertaining to USIA personnel.! S who had no knowledge ofthe case, -checked with the writer an! Hereafter told that as heknew, when investigations are requested by the White House, the FBIfurnishes the results directly to the White House and consequently hisrequest would have to be made through official channels. _
It would appear from the attached memorandum that the President,Marvin Watson and John Macy are under the impression that the FBI isthe only one who has knowledge of Chancellor s arrest record. In thisconnection, the following items are of interest: »

As pointed out in Mr. DeLoach's memorandum attached!,there have been a number of cases where derogatory information was developed

His most famous, broadcastinghis own arrest, took place during
the Republican convention. He
refused to move when an assist-
ant sergeant-at-arms ordered the
aisles cleared.
This is what happened:
I'm not moving," Mr. Chan-
cellor said. Are you going to
carry me out?" - '
We have been instructed to
remove you," said a policeman.
Mr. Chancellor looked up at
the cameras and said, The next
move in this drama is up to the
cops.

his heavy hand on my elbow.Here we go. ' -
"It's awfully hard to remain
dignied at a time like this,"
Mr. Chancellor said as he was
ushered out.

Night he reported the projections and analysis of the election results
as NBC News Electronic Vote Analysis reporter.
In the latter role he contributed additional information
from personal observation gathered from his cross-country travels and
meetings with key local political personalities in advance of the
conventions. Previously, Chancellor had covered every Presidentialcampaign and all but one important off-year election for NBC News 1
since 1950. - i
Chancellor has also served overseas in NBC News bureaus in
Vienna, London, Moscow and Brussels. His reporting has won him a
national Sigma Delta Chi Award and a Robert E. Sherwood Award.
Chancellor Joined NBC News in Chicago inl950 as Midwestern
correspondent. His beat not only covered that city but stretched1*
from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1956 he was a television»floor
reporter at the political conventions and also covered Adlai E.
Stevenson in the Presidential campaign. V

the Lebanese civil war. Assigned to the London Bureau, he ranged as far
as the Khyber_Fass, to Afghanistan and to the;Mediterranean. In mid-

States to work on NBC News coverage of the 1960 elections. He traveled
with the candidates and interviewed them on "The Great Debates," in

New York. He spent the balance of 1962 analyzing and living in

and the candidates themselves. He was also anchor man for "The
Campaign and the Candidates" series of pre-election TV specials and

Chancellor returned to Europe early in 1963 to study the _
Common Market, and reported on it in a widely acclaimed special, "A
Country Called Europe." In July he was named head of the NBC News
bureau covering the Common Market in Brussels. He returned to the U.S.
early in l964 to begin preparation for his floor reporter assignment
