Lillian Hellman is a playwrijht who was born in New 92}
Orleans, Louisiana, on June 20, 1905. She was educated at
New York University.
There appeared in the "New Lasses", a Communist weekly
publication for Lay 3, 1938, Page 19, an article entitled, "The
Qcscow Trials - 4 StEt6L6Ht by huerican Progressives", wtich was
sijned by apgroxinately one hundred ERL fifty so-called American
Projressives. This statement coxpletely supported the policy of
the Soviet Union in its so-called "deconstration trials" as a
result

193$, to the effect that fourteen nierican volunteers rho had been
captured by the Franco Iorces durin_ the Spanish Civil Her had
arrived in Ken Yarn City fIOm Spain. A dinner was given for these
individuals on the nijht of October 18, 1938, at the Hotel COQLDGOTB
New York City, which was the occasion for the launching of a drive
for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to bring back other
jdnrican volunteers in Spain. It was estimated that there were at
that time approximately 1200 such additional American volunteers in
Spain. The dinner was given by the Friends of the Abraham Lincoln
Brigade. Among the speakers of the evening was Lillian Hellman.292 .-

In February, 1939, Kiss Hellman was a sponsor of the
Veterans 0; the J%.brahe:r. Lincoln Brigade. This orgaiisation is
a strictly 3o::;...un.ist front bodj; of ::.en tho foujht for the Loyalist
.»'.r'_;y in Spain and have since returned to the United States.
Accorcling to an ite.-. appearing in the Cornunist publication,
"People's Tforld" for February lh, 1939, Lillian I-IelL..an was one of
the prorinent 4':u_.1¬riCa."1 writers who visited l.ac1rid, Spain, during
the Spanish Cixril "Jar.
In April, 1939, Iiiss I-Iell1..an was one of the sponsors of
the Spanish Refugee Itelief Campaign.

Council of the magazine called, "Equality". This magazine has been
regarded as a Co;n..unist front publication.

A stage play, "CHIL KEEPS HOUR was not political, but was based on the
subject of sox perversion and was barred in some sections of the country.
In 1939, 1915 and 1911;, Kiss was in Hollywood in connection
with the motion picture industry and at those times she moved exclusively in
Communist social circles and carried on activity in strict conformity with the

which was an open notice that the signers supported the "purges" in the Soviet
Union from 1936 to l9§3. This letter was evidence that all the signers were
aligned on the side of JOSEPH STALIH as against the theories of LEON TROTSKY and
would show that they were interested in the inner disputes within the Communist
movement. This letter was publicized in the Communist DAILY IDRICER of April 28,
e 1938. SOURE stated that she signed a letter of protest to Professor JOHN DE-TEY an;
his associates who made a trip to Mexico City to interview LEON TROTSKY for his
version of the Hoscow purges. This event was reported in the magazine sovmw
RUSSIA TODAY, liarch, 1957, issue. _
SOURCE further advised that she was a meniaer of the Executive Board
of the THEATRE ARTS COLEIITTEE, a Communist controlled theatre group set up to
propagandise the theatre in the interest of the Communist Party line. This TAG,
as it was called, was affiliated with the American Peace Mobilization, and fol-
_. lowed the Communist Party line faithfully and dissolved itself after the Communist
line changed with the attack on Russia by Hitler.
I SOURCE stated that lliss HELL}-i.AN collaborated with JCR IS IVENS and
'" ARCHIBALD ilaoLEISH in making a picture called "SPANISH EARTH . This picture was
a propaganda effort dealing with the activities of the Communists in the Civil 'r'.'ar
in Spain during 1937 and 1938. He stated that hiss HELLMAN made a trip to "Loyal-
I ist" Spain during the latter part of 1938 orpearly 1959. This fact was published
in a leaflet issued by the Hollywood Chapter of the League of American Triters,
dated April 2, l9§9, at which time iiiss was listed as a speaker at a
1 "Dinner Forum on Spain" held at the Communist Club House, Testwood Village, Lei
