On April 2h, 1959, I was confined in
the Pearl River County Jeil, located on the second
floor of the courthouse, I was s trusty in the
jail and as such hed the run of the corridor and
bull pen in the cell block. At about 12:25 AH
Setudsy, April 25, 1959, while I was lying awake
on my buk, I heard keys rattling in the door
leadin" from the toll block into the courtroom,Since I had been told several times by Jewel Alford,jailer that if anybody came up there for Parker INegro held for rap ng I white woman, that I should
point Parker out there to them, and to make sure
they got the right iegro, I immediately assumed thit
the keys rattling at the door indicated that some-bogz had come for Parker. Ry bunk being in the

by the steps leading up to the door. A light was
burning over the landing in the bull pen, and
snother light was burning in the upper tier of

as Floren Lee, a Baptist preacher who resides
east of Poplarville. Right behind Floren Leo
was Jewel Alford, the jailer at the Pearl River
County Jail. I'm certain that this was Jewel "o
Alford, because I recognized a gun which he held
in his right hand, n .38 caliber blue steel
revolver with bone handles. Jewel has a gun- A
like this, and I saw on this gun a sort oi bolt
thich sticks through the grips on the gun, which
is the same kind oi bolt on Jewel's gun. Further,right aiter Jewel entered the Jail, he leaned
over to me and said Be quiet, boy , and I imme-
diately recognized his voice. He was wearing a
pair of light tan low quarter dress shoes which
I recognized as shoes which I have frequently
shined for him, using a dark Esquire Stain. -
Jewel was wearing a blue chambruy work shirt and e
blue dungarees. Oter his head was what appeared
to be a black silk scarf, which was completely
draped over his head down over his shoulders,
Outside his shirt. There were small slits tor -
eyeholes, and I could see what appeared to be his
glasses protruding iron inside the scari. Bil
shirt sleeves were rolled down, and he vas wearing
white cotton gloves with a blue elastic band at
the wrist. Bo was Wearing an old gray felt hat
with the brim pulled down all the way around, and
the crown vis pushed out it the top. '

the head oi the stairway. Walker had the jail keys,

stairway. Walker, Lee and Alford then went onto
the second tier and went to the control box in the

the tier, where H. C. Parker was lodged. At about
the time they reached the control box, 1 heard
Parker start hollering for help and for somebody
to get the sheriff.
