October 02. 2014 12:01AM Letters to the Editor, Oct. 2 The choice is clear As a longtime political observer and sometimes participant, I'm delighted to see the citizens of Phoenix given a real choice this election cycle. The choice is obvious. Terry Helfrich, a 35-year resident and committed public servant versus a long time Virginia- and Washington-based bureaucrat on a power trip. A vote for Terry Helfrich will allow Phoenix to arise from the ashes and rejoin the rest of Jackson County again. Last year was canceled due to Tim Reuwsaat’s diagnosis of cancer. Thanks to the great oncology and hospital teams in Medford, Tim is now cancer-free and says the show must go on! This year we are sponsoring CASA of Jackson County, and hope to raise $10,000 for them. Darkwing will be open Thursday, Oct. 30, Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1, from 6 p.m. until 9:30. Tina Reuwsaat, Darkwing Manor It's about profit Wonder why the Oregon Sheriffs Association just donated $100,000 to the No on 91 Campaign (the ballot measure to tax and regulate marijuana)? It’s all about profit. Fighting other crime does not pay as well. Law enforcement gets federal grant money to make drug arrests. Sheriff’s departments are incentivized to keep arrests high to maximize grant money — money that can’t be used for any other purpose. Don’t trust law enforcement on this one; it’s all about the money. Claudia Little, Ashland Voting for Moro The May election proved that the times are a-changin’ in Jackson County — we’re supporting measures to protect our family farmers and our libraries. That’s why it’s important that we citizens elect candidates to run our county government who know this area intimately and care for the land and the people intensely, who have the vision to know how to lead and brains and courage to get us where we need to go. Tonia Moro is that candidate. I’ve known Tonia for a decade and worked with her for several years. Nobody is more thorough than Tonia in the way she approaches issues. She studies them from all sides, listens to everyone concerned and then acts decisively. She’ll protect the GMO crop ban we passed last May and keep our county in the forefront of innovation. I’m voting for Tonia Moro for county commissioner and I hope you will, too! Allen Hallmark, Talent Marching does not make it so Politically motivated climate alarmists continue to describe climate change as an immediate threat. But an op-ed (Wall Street Journal, Sept. 19) by former Obama administration member and theoretical physicist Steven E. Koonin states human-caused climate change, if real, is of the order of natural climate variation because warming has paused while CO2 has increased. He makes the case for climate models being in poor position to give meaningful predictions of the future because of their low resolution and the lack of understanding of the variables affecting climate. The Seattle Times (Sept. 22) reported a NOAA study showing that CO2 is a minor variable affecting climate change in the Northwest. Further, the 6.7-inch sea level rise in 100 years is hardly catastrophic in the context of historical variation. The planet will run out of cheap, abundant, carbon-based fuels, and alternatives need to be developed. That development is a long way off, as is the depletion of conventional fuel materials. Alarmist carbon tax schemes only curb economic growth and propagate poverty by denying energy to the poor. It is our pockets that would provide the wealth redistributed to those unemployed by a stagnant economy. Donald C.
