Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 12, 2005 Homeless man arrested in stabbing death Victim had recently been released from psychiatric treatment By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune A homeless man was arrested Sunday on a charge of murder for allegedly stabbing to death a long-time local resident who battled mental illness. Anthony J. Clubb, 44, was arrested several minutes after a 2:15 a.m. stabbing in west Medford. Police found Jay Hueston Safley, 45, of Central Point, dead in an alley off Fourth Street between Holly and Grape streets. Investigators said Clubb and Safley were involved in a dispute when Safley was stabbed with a knife. An off-duty Medford officer headed home saw Clubb walking several blocks away from the murder scene, stopped to talk to him and subsequently arrested him, said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran. Clubb spent nearly six years in prison following a 1996 conviction for second-degree assault, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records. He has formerly listed addresses in Talent and Phoenix. Advertisement Safley had been released from Rogue Valley Medical Center’s psychiatric ward over the weekend after receiving treatment for bipolar disorder and substance abuse, said his brother, Larry Safley, 42, of Phoenix. "I was very, very, very angry (that he was released)... Jay was not competent to take care of himself," Larry Safley said. "When you’re living a life like that, there’s a lot of opportunity for things to go wrong." Although Jay Safley had earned a law degree, his mental illness and history of substance abuse prevented him from holding a job, his brother said. He frequently ran away from his parents’ Central Point home and spent the past six months living at the Medford Gospel Mission shelter and in a Central Point respite home, Larry Safley said. "I guess the question we have is: ‘Was it preventable?’ " said Safley’s father, 65-year-old Gary Safley. The official cause and manner of Jay Safley’s death is pending an autopsy. Detectives with the Medford Police Department, Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department will continue to investigate the case, Moran said.
