SOU softball has its win streak come to an end ASHLAND - The Southern Oregon University softball team had its school-record winning streak snapped Saturday, but there was good news, too. The Raiders clinched a berth in next month's four-team NAIA Region I tournament with a Cascade Conference doubleheader split against Eastern Oregon Saturday. First-place SOU (25-4, 13-3 Cascade) qualified with its 2-0 Game 1 victory, but the third-place Mountaineers (13-15, 7-7 Cascade) ended SOU's 13-game win streak with a 5-3 Game 2 triumph. Brandi Brown was 5-for-5 with three RBIs in the twin bill and pitched the opening-game win, scattering seven hits. It was the junior's conference-best 22nd win and ninth shutout. The Mountaineers pounded out eight hits and charged to a 5-0 lead through four innings off freshman pitcher Seanna Doyel in Game 2 Southern responded in the fifth with Brown's two-run single, but pitcher Katie Martin enticed Raider sluggers Angie Chaplin and Lisa Aitchison - the potential game-tying runs - into ground-ball outs to stave off a seventh-inning rally. SOU had won five straight at home. Raider junior shortstop Latisha Inget (2-for-6) and freshman second baseman Haley Varley (3-for-7) each extended hit streaks to eight consecutive games. Southern Oregon - three wins away from the school's first-ever conference softball title with four games left - hosts Albertson College in a doubleheader today at noon.
