Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 13, 1915 ASHLAND BUYS LIGHTING PLANT FROM COMPANY ASHLAND, Aug. 12 — The city council last night voted to ratify an agreement with the California-Oregon Power company looking to the abandonment of that corporation of the local field, providing the municipality purchases its poles, lines and other equipment within city limits. In return, the power company will wholesale current to the city according to schedules as may be agreed upon. This contract, if ratified by the people, runs for 20 years. The council also adopted a resolution calling for a special election August 25, thus submitting to the people the question of ratifying the proposition through an amendment to the charter. The resolution carries with it the issuance of $25,000 in bonds to pay the power company for its equipment within city limits. This sum must not exceed $25,000, as the necessary expenditure may be less. Both the agreement and resolution were unanimously adopted by the council. A.C. Hough, attorney of Grants Pass, conducted the negotiations in behalf of the power company. DISTRIBUTE FISH IN RECORD TIME, AUTOISTS ASSERT On Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock a carload of fish for distribution among the streams of Southern Oregon was received at the Medford station, and within one hour after same was received all of the fish were loaded in automobiles and were on their way to the several streams in which they were planted. BEET PROSPECTS BRIGHT, SETTLE FACTORY LATER F.S. Bramwell of beet sugar fame arrived in Medford last night, and in company with W.H. Gore and S. Storey made a roundup of the experimental beet fields planted last spring. Mr. Bramwell secured an average of the fields visited, and was much pleased with the showing made thus far. The beets brought in by Mr. Bramwell are declared by those experienced in beet culture to compare favorably in size and sugar content with the matured product of the Idaho and Utah fields and it is expected that a campaign for acreage will be instituted in the near future. The question of a factory will then be up to the agriculturalists of the valley.
