Hidden Valley couldn’t solve Mazama goalkeeper Carlos Menzo but once Thursday in Skyline Conference boys soccer action, and the Mustangs (4-3, 4-2 Skyline) paid dearly with a 2-1 shootout defeat. Despite advantages of what head coach Tim Hannah estimated as 80 percent of the possession and 36-6 in shots, Hidden Valley suffered a rare league loss to anyone but archrival Phoenix. "There are several teams in our conference that on any given day can step it up and surprise you," Hannah said. "That’s what happened today." Advertisement The Vikings (3-3 Skyline) got a ninth-minute breakaway goal from Eve Melgoza, then limited the Mustangs to Danny Richard’s 38th-minute solo act. Late in overtime, Menzo dove to punch Richard’s attempt wide and preserve the tie, forcing penalty kicks. In the shootout, Mazama found net on four of five shots, and Menzo denied two of Hidden Valley’s four opportunities. One, on Shay Campbell’s try, was of particular wonder. "It got by him, and somehow, he saved it with his foot," Hannah said of Menzo. "It stopped dead on the line. ... Three-quarters of the ball was in." The Mustangs look to rebound when they host Skyline-leading and fifth-ranked Phoenix on Saturday at 10 a.m. ST. MARY’S 4, ROSEBURG JV 2 — Sophomore Austin Grant put in three goals for host St. Mary’s in the nonconference match. Grant’s first score came on a penalty kick in the 30th minute after a takedown in the box. Grant scored again in the 50th minute from 26 yards out. Grant shot and scored from just inside the box in the 65th minute. Senior J.P. Marquart finished off the scoring when he chipped one in from 16 yards. St. Mary’s goalkeepers Dillon Bourke and Martin Nelson teamed for nine saves, while freshman Dash Hillgartner played a strong defensive game. Girls Soccer ASHLAND 1, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 — Airica Cornwell secured 10 of her 13 saves in the second half to keep Cascade Christian even in nonconference action at Hawthorne Park. Ashland (3-4-2) peppered 16 shots at the Challengers (3-2-1), but the Grizzlies could only break through on Hannah Sohl’s 25th-minute tally. Jamie Roupp’s pass was flicked on by Danya Rose-Merkle to Sohl, who finished from 10 yards out. Cascade had earned an early lead on Katie O’Brien’s solo effort in the sixth minute. The Challengers received physical defensive play from stopper Katy Stieglitz in front of goalkeeper Cornwell. ST. MARY’S 2, EAGLE POINT 0 — St. Mary’s used a revamped defensive set in downing visiting Eagle Point in the nonconference match. Both teams recorded 17 shots, but the Crusaders (7-0-1) put senior Alex Tomlinson and juniors Liz Tribelhorn and Britta Beckstead back on defense to help protect the goal. St. Mary’s freshman Shelsea Rawson scored early, getting an assist from Katie Sinner on an 18-yard kick in the sixth minute. Kayla Eichamer found Erin Chamberlain at the top of the box in the 31st minute for the final score. Cross Country CHIEFTAIN TEAMS FOURTH — At Myrtle Point, Rogue River placed fourth in both the boys and girls races in the invitational meet. North Bend won the girls meet with 53 points, followed by Myrtle Point (54), Bandon (57) and Rogue River (68). Allegra Fety covered the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 4 seconds for the Chieftains, good for fourth place. Hollie Dieu of Coquille was the individual winner in 18:49. Other Rogue River runners were Taylor Schefstrom, 11th, 21:40; Lacey Spark, 16th, 22:59; Amanda Selanders, 19th, 23:47; and Elyse Wallace, 27th, 26:02. On the boys side, Brookings won with 57 points, followed by Myrtle Point (81), North Bend (88) and Rogue River (92). Tom McGann placed sixth for Rogue River in 17:48 for 5,000 meters.
