Crook pays for jail agency theft Man steals from corrections department; now he lives there Note to crooks: Don't steal from the Oregon Department of Corrections. A 19-year-old La Pine man learned that lesson the hard way Monday, as a Jackson County judge in Medford sentenced him to 13 months in prison for stealing a chainsaw that belonged to the same agency that runs Oregon's prison system. "It's not every day I put somebody in the custody of the victim," Judge Ray White quipped after court recessed. According to prosecutors, Shenandoah Subica was involved in the theft of a Ford pickup truck and two Husqvarna chainsaws from the Deschutes County Wood Cutting Correctional Facility in Bend. He was arrested Oct. 22 by Medford police. Subica pleaded guilty Monday to one count of first-degree theft by receiving. His attorney, public defender Eugene Thompson, told White the case was a "real wake-up call." "It better be a wake-up call," replied White, who described Subica as a "one-man crime wave" based on the youthful defendant's lengthy criminal history. Subica had nothing to say for himself. "You don't want to spend the rest of your life in and out of prison," White told him. "It's your decision." White also sentenced Subica to serve one year of parole and ordered him to pay restitution. A hearing was tentatively scheduled to determine the figure. At the time of his arrest, Subica was wanted on four Deschutes County warrants.
