SOU track team picks up six victories SALEM - The Southern Oregon University track and field team bagged six victories at the Willamette Invitational Saturday, and Tiwana Merritt had a hand in half of them. The senior sprinter won the 200 in 25.51, the 400 in 56.75 and anchored the Raiders' 4x400 relay team to victory in 4:01.84. Kena Page claimed the women's long jump at 17-11,Nicole Robertson took the women's shot put at 40-03/4 and Nick Dunn won the men's 400 in 49.27. In other events, Jeff Bently was second in the men's javelin at 201-2, Megan Heuberger was third in the women's 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1:04.81; and the Raider women's 4x100 relay squad also finished third. "We had some good progression today - this was a good meet for us," Southern Oregon coach Mike Jones said. Softball SOUTHERN OREGON WINS PAIR - At Ashland, Southern Oregon won its first two games in the Cascade Conference Kickoff Tournament on Saturday. As tournament host, the Raiders (12-2 overall, 2-0 Cascade) defeated Concordia, 2-1, and Albertson, 4-3. Junior pitcher Brandi Brown led SOU to its school-record 10th and 11th straight wins by tossing a pair of complete games. Brown (12-2) allowed seven hits, issued two walks and struck out six against Concordia, then gave up no earned runs, permitted four hits and six walks and mowed down seven on strikes against Albertson. Brown and Angie Chaplin each slapped two hits against Concordia. Brown, Haley Varley and Seanna Doyel lined two hits apiece off Albertson pitchers.
