LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 22 MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 22, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted May. 22, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Convince the governor I read with interest that even the most committed of local anti-LNG campaigners were resigned to the fact that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will approve the Jordan Cove LNG project. This is all the more ironic in that at the FERC hearing, there were 400 citizens in attendance, nearly all of whom opposed this project. I am sure that the fact that there has been a revolving door between the commission and the industries that it regulates played a large role. This situation means that action at the state level is critical. It is looking more and more like our state agencies may be our only hope in stopping this project. This is why convincing Gov. Kate Brown is so important. The local rally that was covered in this article was a prelude to a statewide rally in Salem that will take place on May 26. We must convince our governor that she is the one who can and must protect our homes and our way of life. I encourage all who can to attend the rally and those who can't to contact Kate Brown, as well as their representatives, encouraging them to act. Mark Newberger Ashland Take care on Foothill One recent morning I sat at the intersection of Dodson and Foothill Roads, took a deep breath, and turned right onto Foothill. Immediately a truck came around the curve before Dodson Road faster, I’m sure, than the posted speed limit (40 mph), almost hitting me. The driver then flipped me off, tailgated until I turned onto Vilas Road, and “gave me the bird” one more time. People don’t realize how dangerous that intersection can be! The curve leading up to Devils Garden and Dodson is 100 percent blind to the drivers attempting to turn onto Foothill. There are huge hedges that grow along the roadside, blocking any view of oncoming cars. To the drivers on Foothill: People leaving Devils Garden/Dodson roads  can't see you ! However, there are signs alerting motorists of an upcoming residential road. First there is a “Hidden Driveway” sign, then a “Bus Stop Ahead” sign. After that is a “40 mph/Hidden Driveway” sign, followed by a “Dodson Rd 500 Feet” sign. All these signs are within two-tenths of a mile from the intersection. That means people are entering and exiting Foothill from Devils Garden and Dodson Roads. Please be aware and take care on Foothill Road. Debbie Henner Medford Reject the TPP Froma Harrop (The left is so wrong on trade, May 15) refers to Democrats who stood up against a secret trade deal crafted by corporations and lobbyists as those "who turned on Obama." She says, "we could never compete with pennies-an-hour wages. Those low-skilled jobs are not coming back." NAFTA cost us 1 million jobs and a 580 percent rise in the trade deficit. We can bring those jobs back by not continuing to reward corporations that move factories overseas. Harrop asserts, "The U.S. can't negotiate ... if various domestic interests are pouncing on the details." These details sacrifice our economy, environment and sovereignty. One such detail allows corporations to sue countries for lost profits if they enact environmental or worker protections. Many labor groups, environmentalists and legislators offer solid reasons to reject the TPP. Tell your representatives to oppose the TPP.
