The Raiders finished Day 1 of the two-day, four-match tourney slate with a 2-0 mark after downing unranked Malone, Ohio 30-26, 30-21, 30-22 in the nightcap. The wins came despite recent injuries that sidelined all-star setter Jamie McCreary and outside hitter Jess Childress. "(Backup setter) Melissa (Beard) stepped in and did an outstanding job, and I thought she was a real key to two big wins," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "(Middle blocker) Nicholette Le Bel sprained her ankle Tuesday but absolutely crushed the ball and did a little of everything today." Elliott called the Biola win one of the program’s best during his 14-year Raider coaching career, and it was the school’s biggest upset ever based on national rankings. "We played very efficiently, controlled the ball and were in system," he said. "The nice thing is our young players really stepped up and played well against two great NAIA programs." Southern Oregon plays Savannah, Ga. and top-ranked and defending national champion Fresno Pacific today in the nine-team tourney.
