SOC girls basketball South Medford sinks Mountain View, 71-38 South Medford feasted from the foul line in a non-conference girls basketball win over visiting Mountain View Friday. South Medford (2-0) sank 26-of-38 free throws in the 71-38 win. Junior forward Lynn Wooton and sophomore point guard Emily Perttu combined for 30 points for South, and both capitalized on their attempts from the foul line with eight points each. Additionally, Wooton corralled 12 rebounds. "Lynn played well inside," South Medford coach Andrea Wegner said. "She got a lot of her points off post-up moves." The Panthers' defensive pressure took the Cougars out of their offense for much of the game. "Our full-court press worked well," said Wegner. "We didn't necessarily create a lot of turnovers, but forced a lot of bad shots by them." South sank 20-of-30 free throws in the first half and built a 43-25 halftime advantage. Ellena Flood connected for South's only 3-point basket and led the Panthers with eight assists. Junior guard Brittney Edwards led the Cougars with 14 points and 11 rebounds. "We're showing real good quickness," said Wegner. "We just have to work on our patience on offense." Sophomore Ashley Nelson paced North with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 effort from behind the 3-point arc. Ashlee Giles added 11 points, seven steals, eight rebounds and six assists. The Lakers jumped out to a 9-0 lead, making the Comets play chase the rest of the night. The Comets were able to tie the game four different times but couldn't break into the lead. Brandy Mortenson led the Lakers with 21 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. The Comets were paced by Becky Arreola and Emily Wiley with nine points each. Freshman Sarah Yager added eight points and three assists for Crater in 30 minutes of play.
